Catching up on the Snowflake challenges.

If we’re talking about a whole medium, then fanart in general is a field where I’d like to make progress. I’m a very visual person, and the ability to convert the images in my head into... well, actual pictures on paper, would be a very welcome one. Also, it would be nice to illustrate my own writing.

The next few years of my life might bring me more time to focus on my works. I think that if I’m ever to begin drawing, then this will be the time.

(Of course, even if I started working on it now, I probably would have the self-confidence to show it to the world only five years later. Three if I’m lucky. Well, at least by that moment it would be good...)

I have a lot of writing ideas as well, but I don’t think about them as something I “don’t have the time to do”; instead, I picture them as a police line-up a nice pretty queue. When I’m done with an idea, I pick the next, and eventually, I’ll get around to every single one.

Nostalgic, new, problematic, or forever canons are all welcome to be loved, dissected, and discussed. Have a favorite scene? A much-loved character? A much-maligned character? Just love the whole thing epically? Talk about it all or as little as you want!

Fionn Regan - The Meetings of the Waters Fionn Regan - Turn the Skies of Blue On The Ballroom Thieves - Only Lonely Adam Torres - Morning Rain Joseph - White Flag

When I was first putting together music for this challenge, I wanted to practice drawing with a sad theme, and found it really difficult to wrap my head around. For something I was planning on dipping myself into for 8+ hours, I realized what I needed this month was something that wrapped me up in happiness and excitement.

I chose a group of songs I've been listening to lately and added a few more as I dug deeper into this illustration. They definitely don't feel all the same--a lot of comforting songs that calm me down, leading up to something that really got me pumped up and wanting to dance.

I hesitate to get a little personal, but I suppose this challenge is all about emotional vulnerability to some extent. I set everything aside this past week as I dealt with the difficult passing of a pet. When I started working on it again, my perspective had completely changed. I originally started this when I was happy, but also wanting to escape and relax. Dealing with my grief, however, I felt I didn't want to escape. It was coincidence that my illustration featured a girl and her rat-dragon, and it was coincidence that the songs I put together were about overcoming sadness, but these things made me cry as I completed it. I was in a lot of pain and, instead of feeling frozen by it, what flowed instead, was joy.

Some of us may have a huge circle of friends, others may have one or two really close fannish companions. Being in fandom is always a chance to interact with new people and potentially make new friends! Challenge #5 is all about continuing the fandom celebration that is the Snowflake Challenge and expanding our circle!

An easy way to accomplish this one is to head to the new communities you’ve found as a result of Challenge #3, or check out people’s responses in Challenge #1, 2 and 4, and meet some more new people. Or take someone up on their offer of a Discord invite, or send a message to a new person on Twitter or Tumblr. Perhaps use the ‘Network’ feature in Dreamwidth, if you have a DW account. Who knows, you might just find some new kindred spirits!

But I've been wanting to do slightly more abstract/surreal paintings + spend less time on a painting. For this challenge, I spent more time thinking about how to convey what these songs inspired for me. It was hard not making the drawing too literal, I still want people to have "their own version" of it. This was a great challenge, for some reason I never took the time to do something like this and now I can't wait to do more paintings in the same vein. Hoping they're going to be more subtle and less awkward <3 PS: it was very hard keeping this a small blurb because I could talk about this foreverrrrr. Due to quite a busy month I wasn't able to finish this but here's a wip at least. c:

I actually take a lot of inspiration from music when drawing, and it's rare for me to be drawing without at least listening to something. More than slow and -insert super emotional text- songs I mostly listen to more electronic stuff because for me the thing that really brings me into a flow is the overall beat and rhythm a song carries, so even a sad song can make me draw happy things or vice versa, if the beat has that sort of tone for me. Basically I often just end up mindlessly doodling and drawing stuff to a song flow, rather that focusing on meaning behind it. This is why more upbeat, electronic or many songs with no (or little) text bring me the most inspiration. (I hope that makes sense ;w; )

I used to be really afraid to share these as a kid though, because it's not the typical mainstream music like uh, Rihanna, Avril Lavigne -insert some other famous artists from 10y ago here- that pretty much all of my classmates/girl-friends used to listen to, and every time I tried to share one of the songs that brought me inspiration to draw something I felt like a weirdo in their eyes. Even now I often still feel like that because I think most of the people I know will immediately search for deeper meanings and connections in the song I used and if it suddenly turns out to be some dubstep they're like "...???" xD 

Anyway, when listening to Hysteria I felt this more fantasy-magical-strong power feeling and I immediately imagined a character controlling or standing in a strong current of water flowing around around them. The drawing is not completely how I would've wanted it to be but I still plan to finish this. ♥
