William Henry Playfair Statue
This statue is outside the National Museum of Scotland. William on Chambers Street, Playfair is considered one of the greatest architects of the 19th century and is the brains behind many of Edinburgh's neo-classical landmarks.
His work extends from Old College,, just round the corner from this statue, and the heart of the University of Edinburgh, to the National Monument on Calton Hill, to the National Gallery of Scotland and beyond. Few architects of his age had the opportunity to make such a far-reaching impact on an urban landscape, but his work has not yet received the attention it is due.
My favourite building of his is the former Donaldsons School at West Coates just to the west of the city centre. The building has recently been redeveloped as luxury apartments, as seen below.
