Fighting for a Greater Cause
Undocumented Immigrants deserve a chance to be treated EQUALLY!
Their crisp black shirts stand out, as they are in the campus center handing out heart shaped goodies. “IMMIGRANTS WE GET THE JOB DONE” is written in white writing, supported by a multi colored heart that symbolizes the American flag. That is just one of the many outreach programs the Undocumented Student Alliance performs on the college campus. The Undocumented Student Alliance, also known as USA, is a woman lead organization that challenges and discusses the concepts behind immigration in the United States. Their mission strives from honoring, empowering and advocating for immigrant youth. The origin of this organization stems from an event, where an undocumented author was presenting his book. The authors incredible journey and a gruesome story inspired these ladies to create the Undocumented Student Alliance. The five ladies all came from different countries around the world; Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, etc. After meeting each other for the very first time at this event they began creating what is now known as the Undocumented Student Alliance. October 2017 was pivotal for USA as they started drafting what the club would be, “We wanted to create this club to provide a haven for undocumented immigrants to feel safe and supported” said Josselin Paz founder of USA. From this day fourth, The Undocumented Student Alliance pledged to inform and educate the community about Immigration and Immigrant rights. That indeed aTheir shiny pins that portray the photo of an orange monarch butterfly, connect with their multi colored flyer, showing the different concepts behind these symbols. The monarch butterfly is vital for the Undocumented Student Alliance, as it is the national symbol for the dreamers. Alongside, the Monarch butterfly being one of their symbols, they also incorporate a symbolic meaning in their flyers. Their flyer consists of a young boy in a white shirt hanging on to the American flag. The meaning behind the flyer is holding on to the American dream; everyone has their own unique American dream to pursue. “Everyone has a different perspective when it comes to their American dream. Some undocumented immigrants seek asylum in the U.S, while other undocumented immigrants want to provide a better environment for their families” said Corrine Herrera, public relations for USA. Those are the aspects of immigration that the undocumented student alliance seeks to educate the community about.
As said before, USA spends their time creating programs that will benefit the public overall. They implement different techniques to entertain the crowd, while still getting their point across. One of their most outstanding programs was their program called “Ask a Lawyer”; this program gave students the chance to speak with a lawyer about the rights they had if approached by the police. This program was very effective as the undocumented student alliance was handing out “Know you Rights” cards as the presenter was speaking. The presenter's blue blazer complimented her white pants, which were the symbols for freedom and innocence. As she began to speak her soothing voice eased the crowd, while still delivering the harsh realities of immigration laws. “It is important that everyone knows the rights they are entitled to by the government. Those rights can provide you context to the situation at hand” said Gissel Marquez, treasurer for USA. Overall, the Undocumented Student Alliance wants the college campus to ignore these misconceptions placed on undocumented immigrants; they want the college campus to be aware of the struggle's immigrants have trying to progress in the U.S. Their attempts to advocate for this cause have surpassed the limit one can achieve. Due to their advocacy, they have connected with powerful allies around New York; some include lawyers, immigrant activists, radio host, etc. These events have driven the undocumented student alliance to fight harder for those who are afraid to speak up, due to fear of deportation. “If you want a change to occur you must voice it yourself, if we all unite and fight for better immigration laws we will succeed. IMMIGRANTS WE GET THE JOB DONE” said Manuela Hurtado, president of the Undocumented Student Alliance.re what they are currently doing as they host varies club meetings and programs. Mondays are prime time for the Undocumented Student Alliance, as they are seen getting ready to educate the public.
Russell Brand for president. No, seriously.
This is what people need to do these days. Kudos to him, I think Paxman was ripped apart by Russell's passion. Everyone should watch it, and if you don't like what Russell's saying, I suggest a dose of common sense and taking your head out of the sand. “You don’t have to listen to my political point of view. But it’s not that I’m not voting out of apathy. I’m not voting out of absolute indifference and weariness and exhaustion from the lies, treachery, deceit of the political class, that has been going on for generations now. And which has now reached fever pitch where you have a disenfranchised, disillusioned, despondent underclass that are not being represented by that political system so voting for it is tacit, complicity with that system and that’s not something I’m offering up.” Link to the video: http://gawker.com/russell-brand-may-have-started-a-revolution-last-night-1451318185?utm_campaign=socialflow_gawker_facebook&utm_source=gawker_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow Link to the transcript: http://www.broadsheet.ie/2013/10/24/viva-brandanista/
