There’s probably an independent film festival near you, but you don’t go to it, and there’s maybe someone at a local newspaper or blog that went themselves and wrote about the movies, but you didn’t even read that, did you?

In fairness this is far more timely, relevant, and appealing than anything else I’ve seen from Newsweek in 20 years.

Back in the day, the guys at MTV came up with the idea of filming individuals with disparate personalities and a wide variety of backgrounds brought together in the same roof. The end result was The Real World, at the time a revolutionary and groundbreaking show that was the first to tackle serious issues on air.

At the time, it was hoped that by bringing these people together, they would encourage them (and the audience) to look past their differences and learn mutual tolerance and respect. A decade later, the reality show genre it launched became a cancerous sore that dominated the 2000s, which, coincidentally (or not), happened at the time Television finally played second fiddle to the Internet.
