Safe Landing, a quick ZX Spectrum piece from me. Initially done during the Chaos Constructions demoscene event as a 2h realtime entry on the theme "Returning home", I expanded it with clouds and road details in a couple drink & draw sessions here at Spelkollektivet.

I’ve been mostly just drawing sprites for Pixel Art Academy as far as my art goes lately so it’s nice to create some actual artworks. I have some other stuff in the works, so hopefully there’ll be more updates coming from me soon. And I’ll try to do more pixel art news posts as well. I miss this lil’ blog of mine. Hope you guys have been doing well in the mean time.

Chaos Constructions 2017 August 26–27, Saint Petersburg and online

My fellow retronators, it’s one week till Russia’s biggest, baddest, bestest demoscene party Chaos Constructions! Get ready as you have time till the weekend to create and submit new (unreleased) artworks and music to its main competitions:

Of course I am most excited about the ZX Spectrum categories. Last year we’ve again seen some new great work, such as these beauties from diver:

If you want to just jump into the competitions really quickly, there are realtime events at the party where you get a theme and can make artworks in the limited time frame. 

You don’t even have to be in Russia to participate. Me and a fellow Pixel Art Academy classmate just joined through the stream, hanged out, worked on our Realtime ZX pieces, and submitted them online—I plan to do it again this year. I’m also preparing one new piece for the main compo.

I’m super excited as you can imagine. I even started learning Russian this year so I’m one step closer to the time I can go there in person (maybe next year). Attending a ZX Spectrum demoscene party is definitely on my bucket list.

These are the ZX Spectrum works from this year’s Chaos Construction demoscene party that took place last weekend in St. Petersburg.

The images above are ordered from first to last place as voted at the party (7th place that is not in the chart is Drinker by Dimidrol).

Dmitri ‘Moroz1999′ Ponomarjov cleaned the place with the best entry in the main graphics category (new works prepared earlier for the competition) as well as in realtime graphics, which is a 2.5h competition that happens at the event (the prompt was ‘city of the future’).

There were much fewer entries in realtime than last year (I slept through it after working all night on the main entry lol), but all in all we got some great new works added to the Spectrum scene.

Here are my favorite entries from the ZX Spectrum Graphics main competition at Chaos Constructions 2016. I’ve also thrown in the winner of the Realtime compo (the skull) and the animated portrait from the 2nd place 640K demo.

Chaos Constructions 2016

It’s end of August, which means it’s time for this year’s largest Eastern European demoscene party Chaos Constructions!

Why am I bringing this up (except to have an excuse to put more ZX Spectrum art on the blog)? This year you can take part in the competition remotely as well. In particular, the two realtime competitions (ZX Spectrum graphics and music) will accept submissions sent online.

The realtime parts begin as one of the first events of the weekend, at 10:30 AM UTC (13:30 PM local MSK) this Saturday, August 27, and you have two and a half hours to create art or music based on a theme that will be announced on the party webpage. 

If you miss that one (or just want a more casual thing), you can still participate in the ZX Spectrum attributes mode compo (32x24px, 53 colors) at 13:00 PM UTC (16:00 PM MSK). It’s even as simple as using the online editor.
