The Geneva based graphical design studio Chaotic Atmospheres created a series of digital extraterrestrial species of miniature trees naming the project Alien Bonsaïs.
family/genus: caradae sideris | home planet: dyyg el rhaaben
family/genus: tortus caruleum | home planet: mare infinum
family/genus: caradae superior | home planet: dyyg el ssil
Each species is presented scientifically, with name and planet of birth. The trees are created using multiple graphical softwares to render unfamiliar textures and hues.
family/genus: caradae capesus | home planet: dygg el rhaaben
family/genus: aspona aspones | home planet: ikam
family/genus: aspona gatik | home planet: ikam
family/genus: senesus pevonis | home planet: tarkam
family/genus: polygonis vespae (left) polygonis tubulosae (right) | home planet: polygonia
family/genus: tartuga acutis | home planet: mare infinum

Alien Bonsaïs Extra-Terrestrial Tree Species by Chaotic Atmospheres
Last year, I had the opportunity to test the new software from E-On, Plant Factory. Meanwhile, I discovered the software from Allegorithmic, Substance Designer. Initially, I wanted to use Substance Designer to texture the trees, but Plant Factory exports "tiled" textures, which were not managed at the time by Substance Designer (but they are now). So I had the idea of making bonsai trees : it allowed me to create plinths that I could texture with Substance Designer, while allowing me to create trees with more extreme forms. So I created the plinths on 4D cinema (some shapes are taken directly from my other projects). I then imported the plinths on Plant Factory to create the bonsais directly on them. I exported the composition on Substance Designer for texturing and composed everything on Cinema 4D for the final rendering. The Photoshop part was very limited on this project : I just tweaked the colors and contrasts and added some grit to the image. I finished this project last year. But I didn't found a good way to expose the pictures : I wanted the trees of the same species to be side by side, but they looked too tiny on the old Behance layout. This changed with the new page layout and the "full bleed" option. So I have been able to publish this project, one year after its completion.

This time I would like to share with you some interesting digital art pieces. It comes from a 3D artist Istvan, known as Chaotic Atmospheres. The artist experiments with various software to create unique pieces.
My personal favourites are ‘Flowing City Map’ and ‘Eroded leaves’ projects. These projects touch the topics that I am very interested in: Urban and natural structures, patterns of cities and nature.
The first series of images explores identities of cities and their inhabitants. The pieces represent the influence that cities have on the environment through ‘erosion flow map’ of each place.
‘Eroded Leaves’ project is a series of images generated by the flow map of the erosion device. It has a similar look to the ‘Flowing City Map’, but explores a different theme - detailed patterns found in nature, the veins of leaves.
Find out more about these and other projects by Chaotic Atmospheres here. You can also follow the artist on Behance and Twitter.
