if a queer person believes 2 same-sex characters are romantically-involved / dating (especially when their sexualities have never been clarified) it’s best to try and listen to their standpoint because 9 time out of 10 they’re viewing it from a non-heteronormative and without that internalized homophobia that a lot of straight people view lgbtq+ relationships from.
there’s this constant among straight people of them automatically assuming characters are not queer, so when comments are made, even in a joking manner like “oh, they’re so gay,” or “they’re definitely dating,” there’s that instantaneous rebuttal of “they’re not.” it’s heteronormativity and internalized homophobia and it in itself limits non-queer people from seeing relationships amongst characters or even like common attributes (which are usually stereotypes that you should try and stray away from?) that hint towards a character being queer...
if you can replace one character in a relationship that’s mlm/wlw/nblnb/etc. with a character of the opposite gender or even a character that creates the heteronormative “dominant/submissive” balance (which can also be a toxic from a certain outlook esp when it comes from non-queer people) and their gestures suddenly become romantic then you’re likely refusing to see an aspect of the original characters relationship due to internalized homophobia / heteronormativity....
and example being literally 99% of protagonist best friend relationships. going to the ends of the earth to save your bestfriend when everyone else has given up on them is romantic as hell until you it’s same-sex. looking into your bestfriend eye’s and having an epiphany that leads you to mass-genocide is romantic until it’s same-sex. being emotionless until your bestfriend comes along & literally introduces you to the concept of love & kindness is romantic until it’s same sex. even little things like a character gazing at another character for a second too long would be an obvious subtle romantic telling but if they were same-sex it’s that immediate block that doesn’t allow everyone to see it that way
also keep in mind queer people are constantly looking for representation in media so let us have that??? it’s not harmful unless it’s a purposeful missexualization of a character with an identified sexuality that’s being dismissed... everyone wants representation in media, especially minorities so let people find their representation anywhere they can get it.
