i haven’t done up a proper write-up of breedchangey headcanons but for a guardian, breedchanging is seen as basically admitting defeat that you couldn’t find your charge, or that you hated your charge so much you wanted to escape. it’s an incredibly cowardly action in guardian society, you’re giving up.
but the crueler side of it is when a guardian fails to protect their charge. the charge is dead or gone and the guardian has to live with that pain and desolation and failure for the rest of their life (which may not last that long tbh). if you breedchange to escape that, it’s utterly taboo. if you failed, you failed, and it’s your burden to bear. trying to escape it is shameful. a guardian who is wasting away after the loss of a charge won’t accept a breedchange even if one becomes available to them because they believe that they deserve their fate 100% - it’s not just peer pressure that causes the shame, it’s practically hardwired
guardian pride is infamous among other dragon breeds (and kind of a hassle to deal with tbh)
the bigger the guardian the smaller the charge
so now that luke doesnt really have a charge (right?) did he finally find out about the truth of his o-so-precious "light tome"?
luke’s pronouns are they/them
and no lmao, they’re still so cagey about who gets to read/touch/interact with the book that no one has ever actually used the spells written in it. and i don’t really think luke values the tome for it’s light properties; they’re a paladin of the lightweaver but like the shittiest paladin ever, the lapsed catholic of paladins if u will. they just value it because it’s a thing they own and they are extremely territorial over their possessions
so when I first started playing Flight Rising I kind of hated charges because I was terrible at coming up with them and then I found your lore and discovered charge suffering. So I would like to thank you for showing me a whole new way to destroy my dragons
this is what i like to hear
yeah honestly i completely ignored charges as a thing for a loooong time. like i only had my important guardians in the first place because of a naming coincidence, they could easily have been another type of dragon if guardians weren’t named guardians. when i first actually started thinking about charges and the Suffering Potential, i started liking guardians on their own merits and not just because they share a name with something else
i wrote that charge post last night in a daze because i'd actually been drawing neven earlier with the acorn. delta gave it to them to look after so they took it on a trip around fuil darach territory (guardian)luke is a lot less prone to charge anxiety so they've been leaving their charge with rúth for pretty much as long aa they've besn able. rúth used to try to learn how to read using it. luke threw their charge exactly once and it was at delta in an emergency; delta caught it of course but it was nerve-wracking for him
guardians showing their trust in their partner by leaving their charge in their partner's care for a whole day. the ultimate couple bonding exercise
magmacannon replied to your post:lbr though delta had it easy when it comes to...
If it grows into a tree is that a good or bad because it breaks the acorn but technically it’s totally still alive
He can plant it next to Luke and be a happy family Congrats Delta
ok this is true tragedy right here. delta plants his charge tree beside the leafy remains of his sibling and never leaves again. this is so sad that it’s Bad Ending material here i love it
