Last night in Charlestown, West Virginia was perfect. I could not ask for more, and the night before in Atlantic City, was the exact same thing.
True family, friends and fans, singing, partying and rocking, with both of the VIP Meet & Greets over sold out and I wasn’t going anywhere until I met everybody.
Again, my gratitude is high and I could not ask for more. This weekend is dedicated to…
On our last full day in Charles Town, we had the thought that we could walk over to the nearby Hollywood Casino in the afternoon to get a drink and check it out before coming back to the hotel to make some dinner. While I had plotted a walking path to get there, I kept noticing that there weren’t many sidewalks, well, anywhere, and we didn’t really make it very far before realizing that this was probably a bad idea. I vaguely remembered something about the hotel offering a shuttle to get to the casino, so we went back, I asked the front desk, and about five minutes later the casino shuttle appeared. The driver was super-nice, offering his tips and advice on where to go, and after picking up another group of guests at another hotel, we made the long, meandering journey to Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.
To be honest, we were kind of curious what this place would be like in the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday in July, and the answer was: kind of lively? We definitely felt like the youngest people there by a solid decade, but the people were out and gambling, including a craps table that was particularly energetic.
In my research on the place, I knew that there was a beer bar in the food court area known as The Eatery, and while some of the food stalls were open…the bar was not. (In all fairness, our shuttle driver didn’t have great things to say about this food court, so a point for him for accuracy.) Instead, we took a walk around the casino to check it out and see if there were any other options before turning around and going back to the hotel.
Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races would be the first of many casinos I’d visit between then and mid-August, and my main takeaway was that it was fine. The Hollywood theming is nice (if slightly dated), and I wish there were more food/beverage options, but overall it’s fine. I wasn’t struck with the eeriness of being in a liminal space like I was while walking through the casinos in downtown Reno, so at least they have that going for them.
We ended up at ESPN Bet, a sportsbook/restaurant/bar that we thought didn’t open until 4, but in actuality only food service started at 4 and the bar itself was open. We had a few beers and talked to our bartender who regaled us with stories of the various casinos she’s worked at over the years, and it ended up being really nice. Curiosity sated, we hopped back on the shuttle bus and went back to the hotel so I could go grab food to make dinner.
