here’s a snippet of something i started last week but have kind of lost momentum on atm: college!mack swaps places with our mack! 🩵

But it’s not that Mack is there. It’s the way he’s standing—weirdly stiff, like he’s bracing for something. His eyes scan Will’s face quickly, flicking over his features with a sharp, searching intensity that puts Will immediately on alert.

“You good?” Will starts to ask, towel still slung over his shoulders, hand running through his curls. But before he can finish, Mack says,

“You’re Will Smith.”

Will freezes, towel halfway to his head again. He stares at Mack, who is still staring at him, wide-eyed and a little pale, like he just saw a ghost. Or maybe a celebrity. It’s unsettling in a way Will can’t quite name.

He lowers the towel slowly. “Uh… yeah?”

His voice is careful, casual, but he frowns slightly, scanning Mack’s face in turn now. Mack doesn’t look hungover or concussed, but there is something off. Like he isn’t quite sitting right in his own skin.

“Where…” Will hesitates. “Where else would I be?”

Mack doesn’t answer. Just keeps staring at him like he’s trying to solve an impossible equation. Like Will’s face is familiar and foreign all at once.

Will tilts his head. “Mack?”

And something in Mack’s face twitches, but he doesn’t say anything yet. Will’s chest tightens just slightly, a faint edge of unease working into his calm. He takes a step closer.

“You hit your head or something?”

Will drops the towel from his head, blinking at Mack like he’s trying to decipher whether this is a joke, a prank, or maybe some kind of weird sleepwalking thing. He takes a careful step forward, all damp skin and dripping curls and bare feet padding quiet against the hardwood floor.

“Mack?” he says slowly again, like he’s testing the name for familiarity. He lifts a hand, almost without thinking, fingers ghosting toward Mack’s temple like he’s checking for fever—or a glitch in the matrix. “Are you okay?”

Mack flinches just slightly, not in fear, but like he hadn’t even noticed Will was moving until that moment. His eyes dart to Will’s hand, then to his face, then away again, all the while his brow furrowed tight, like it does when he’s trying to make sense of a scrambled play mid-shift.

And then—

“Did we hook up or something?”

Will practically chokes on air. His hand drops like it’s been burned. “What?”

Mack holds up both palms like it’s a fair question. His voice is fast, a little defensive. “Well I’m in an apartment I don’t recognise and—well, you’re here, and you’re— you’re YOU, so I just—”

He gestures broadly, like Will’s mere presence explains all of this.

Will blinks. “I—what?”

But Mack’s not even listening. He’s in motion again, shifting gears entirely, like he’s still trying to piece together what the hell is going on by triangulating some invisible social map.

“So not you then?” he says, eyes narrowing thoughtfully. “Who’s your roommates? Your lineys, right?”

Will opens his mouth. Closes it. Then says, “Gabe and Leno?”

Mack claps his hands together once, like something’s clicked into place. “Okay. Cool. So did I hook up with one of them? Must’ve been a crazy night. I can’t remember shit.”

Will’s brain skips a few essential steps.

“Mack, what—Gabe? Or—Leno?”

He can’t even finish the sentence. The mental image alone is enough to send him into a spiral. Mack. With either of them. Will stifles a laugh—nervous, incredulous.

Which apparently is the wrong move.

Mack’s face scrunches again, this time a little wounded, like Will’s just insulted his honour. “What, you don’t think I can wheel your buddies?”

“No, I—fuck, I don’t—” Will rubs a hand down his face, exasperated and deeply, profoundly lost. “What is happening right now?”

I'm so curious about the pony fic like...(?

this is sooo silly and i wrote it like immediately after listening to cat's podcast with them for the first time but, the entire premise is literally: will's about to hook up with a girl, like LITERALLY about to, and then pony by ginuwine suddenly starts playing because it's the ringtone will set for mack lol. the girl's like seriously?

will regrets his life choices but is like... i should probably get that right??? what if mack's hurt/not okay? i told him what i was doing... surely it's an emergency? the girl's like ugh, ok whatever.

basically mack's calling to be like 'uhhh, why don't you come here and fuck me instead?' will's brain short-circuits and then he's rushing out of there SO fast and saying 'yeah, yeah. okay' and driving over to mack because what! the! hell!

this is a fic i've written most of haha but just held off posting because i didn't really feel it was ao3-worthy. maybe i'll post what i have here in full if people would like to see?! it's literally just silliness and crack shennanigans lol.

here's a snippet that gives you the vibe immediately lol:

“Hey?” He answers cautiously as he half-eyes the girl and repositions himself a bit on the bed so his jeans aren’t cutting into his hardening dick so much. “Hey.” Mack answers quickly, sounding chipper, like he’s pleased to have caught him, which confuses Will. Not an emergency then. “I, uh. Dude, I told you where I am. I can come and hang after. We can finish that—“ “Oh I know.” Mack says easily, cutting off any trail of thought in Will’s brain. “Uh, right. So just let me finish up here and then—“ “Orrrrr, you could come over here and get your dick wet instead.” Will’s mouth drops open in the way he’s been told it does after a brutal shift on the ice.

i feel like there was definitely some sort of fallout between them which is why they’re not living together ):

i don't think we should be worried at all!!!

it completely makes sense to me that they both want to stay with the marleaus and thorntons in their guesthouses. will and mack were very vocal about how much they enjoyed staying with their families and playing with the kids, plus the mentorship patty and jumbo gave them!!

with these arrangements they probably get at least one good home-made meal a week (which i can imagine colleen in particular is happy about!) and help with anything they're not too sure about on their front doorsteps. plus, according to toff, patty and jumbo's houses are like 5mins away from each other anyway!

i don't see this meaning anything has changed from last season at all unless we hear anything directly otherwise - their current arrangement just suits them both so well, so why change it up when it's worked this past year! i bet they didn't even move their stuff out over the summer lol

moving into their own apartment would mean a lot of work and managing a lot of new things themselves and they probably want to avoid the stress as long as they can - i would if i could!!

+ while were on the topic, i know we would all loveeee to have a summer of willmack content but i think we have to remember - these two are going to see each other (and practically live out of each other's pockets) for the whole season!! they know this, and are obviously spending time with ppl they won't get to see as much - i don't think we should be reading into anything too much when we're already working with scraps to begin with! 🩵🩵

Gabe blinks against his mouth, murmurs, “Are you okay?”

Matt just smiles. That quiet, knowing smile. “Mhm. You?”

“Yeah, just…” Gabe huffs a breath. “You’re being all… tender.”

“You don’t like tender?”

“No—I mean, I do—just, like, you usually—” He gestures vaguely, cheeks going a little warm. “You usually don’t start tender.”

Matt leans back slightly, his fingers stroking along Gabe’s jaw. “Thought we could go slow.”

Gabe squints at him. “Why?”

Matt just raises a brow.

And suddenly, it clicks.

The conversation from the other night. The dumb, late-night honesty. Gabe talking about his first time like it didn’t matter, like it wasn’t a big deal, like he hadn’t thought about it more than he should’ve. About not finishing. About not feeling seen. About how it just sort of… happened.

And now Matt is—

Oh.

Matt’s pretending like this is Gabe’s real first time. Giving him the one he should’ve had. Soft. Kind. Full of care.

Gabe’s heart stutters a little in his chest.
