Four years ago, Misty Copeland became the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre’s 75-year history.

Now, an 11-year-old black girl is also breaking barriers as the star of the New York City Ballet’s holiday production of George Balanchine’s "The Nutcracker."

I’ve been in a really funky space for the last week. I had a small vacation that really brought out of a lot a darkness. And then this little girl made me feel happiness this morning. Meet Charlotte Nebres, the first person of color that was given the lead in The NYC Ballet’s, Nutcracker Suite. It’s very important that we all celebrate these first in this country. We’ve never been closer to slavery than we are at this very moment. So when there are accomplishments, celebrations ought to happen. Good job my little sister.
