PROCESS
not nesessarily has to be done in the written order, we continue exploring non-linear approaches :) Remember: from which side we should eat this elephant? From any side!
- collect the materials / sourses related to the story, sourses of inspiration and moodbord. (done)
- WRITE topics, inspiration sourses, places & spaces, charachters/narrators, forms of narration / visual languages, events / scenes ON CARDS
- make a game of cards. Lay out different possibilities and ways to tell the story
- lay the story on different stuctures: vocabulary seems to me the most appropriate. But also: a labyrynth, with giving each time a question/ choice. A flower, where all leaflets connect to the central event (discovery video). An endlessness sign. A novel which the main character writes. A body (!!) structure
- work with the composer Anna Mikhailova so that she becomes co-author. The music is the string on which the story gets pulled out.
- continue thinking process while making the dolls by hands
- shoot the opening scene (the dead/alive fountain/ children choir song)
- work with the actors on writing their scenes (with them)
- find locations, times, equipment etc.
- shoot shoot shoot
- edit ( in the shooting, after the shooting + give the viewer chance to edit)
- present in different forms: a few variants of ready story + the open constructor (interactive: cinema + remote control for each viewer or space-based installation.
CHARON’S DAUGHTERS.
This story is rich, and I’ve been doing research on it for several years.
It contais possibility
- to questions the norms and the perception of rational / moral judgement
- create poetic, beautiful, multi-layer story with the use of metaphoric language
- experiment with non-linear and multivocal narrative
- create a constructor narrative: where the author and eventually the viewer can construct their own variant of the story
- explore and express a concept of multiplicity
- explore and express the concept of non-linear time, and “time-pocket” through the process of creating the film, in the topic and events of the story itself, and in the structure and form of narrative
- explore the topics of geniality and a genius / vs madness in a society
- explore the topic of death. Attitude towards death in different cultures. My own obsession with the concept of reviving of the dead, rooted in my trauma of a death of my girlfriend. The poetic metaphoric language of seeing the dead as living.
- work with my own Russian identity, explore the deepness of Russian culture through the cultural referencess, the Russian visuality and Russian social critique.
- Explore the practice of deep collaboration with the composer and actors on the early moment of creating concept and writing script.
BIG QUESTION
I have a film story. This film was in my head for already 4 (!) years.
It is bigger than me - in the way that this is something unimaginable for me, something which goes far beyond my own experience or fantasy. Yet, it happened in reality.
I want to create this film beyond the borders of documentary and fiction.
Later - more about the story.
Now funny thing. I was always busy with the question - from which side shall we start to eat this elephant?
The answer was funny, even banal. It came to me like an opening, like serendipity. The answer is: from any side.
Meaning: it doesn’t matter where you start as soon as you start.
Inspiration for this:
I was on the concert of Nick Cave. It was so, so strong and special. One thing which struck me: Nick is not beautiful at all. But he is so strong! He is the message himself, and the message is: go and do your thing! The thing which you need to do. His son died, he made a beuatiful project out of grieving. Therefore it doesn’t matter from which side you start eating this elephant as soon as you start.
So’ let’s keep going.
I had a dream, Joe.
