cancelling time 2 / slice of time

Cinema is cancelling of time. It keeps you frozen in front of the screen. While you're watching the screen, you cancel your fear of death, which makes you run around and worry about the things. How long can you live in front of the screen with all your worries suppressed? I aim to make slow, very slow shots which brings you as a viewer into a passive-meditative state of mind. How long can you hold your gaze on screen? The death is behind it, but you can't see it while you're enchanted by the shining of the screen.

It's a collection of short videos which I use as a scetch-book. Cancelling of time

Death is a taboo topic. Death is an ultimate point of our life journey (is it?). We can’t talk about it, really - because we can see this transformation only from one side. The rest is territory of fantasy. This topic attracts us, it fascinates us, that’s why it’s a subject of so many speculations.

Death is the pain of time, the fear of time. We know that our time is limited (is it, really?), that makes us move - out of the fear to miss our time.

reviving the dead is cancelling of time. It is the magical belief that time is not so fatal, it’s not only the killer, but also a doctor. It’s not only one way street - it can be sliced endlessly, like the bread of Jesus, and it can be rotated up and down.

It is just a belief, a fantasy, but it’s taking charge on the ruthless killer machine of time.

That’s why I chose as a main character a man who tried to revieve the dead and through that - to cancel the time. He was working with the taboo topic and that’s why he was proclaimed insane and destroyed. Nobody is allowed to stand on the way of time.

Cinema is also - cancelling of time. It can’t physically revive the death, but it can stop the time and scroll it back. Doing cinema - means taking power over the time.

time is one more dimension of space - when we move towards each other, our time shortens, when we move away, it lengthens. If we are in a constant move, we can pace with the time. We don't have to do anything, and yet - we move. We win some time from the universe. We could use this time to read, or write, or learn. But most of the time, we just waste it, it was a too easy gain, there was no struggle over this time, so we just stare out of the window, not even hoping to see there something exciting.

on the workshop Floris asked about our sourses of inspiration. Partly as a friendly joke, I said that I like to stare at my old shoes and how the washing machine works. But it’s true. In this way I understand better the mechanics of time. When shoes become worn, there is not only the lessening of shoes (a way towards the end, inevitable death, when they will make their way to the junk). There is also something very important adding to them. This quality of seeing the time, existing in time. (shoes exist in the time only when they're walked in, the rest they're frozen in time, time doesn't exist for them when they wait on the shelf). I like worn shoes because they bear direct witness of time, the kilometers they were walked in. Time is proportional to space, in this case. They bear the dirt of my past. Looking at them I can prove that the past existed.

Train stopped. Waiting with no action brings you into a different mode: suddenly some action is required, in order not to stand still (standing still can be equal to death). But it's only a limited time of waiting. What can you fit in it? smoking a sigarette? reading a book?writing a short message on whatsapp? writing a book? Can you possibly fit the whole Universe into this waiting on the platform between movement and movement? -- It's a collection of short videos which I use as a scetch-book. eternal confrontation, when a subject does have a voice. Do we have right to film trees, houses, birds? Do we need to ask their permission. The pure observation state of mind is never possible - because then we dismiss the object's will, their right to exist on their own unobserved territory. Visual quest is always trying to conquer territory, trying to possess a new object - like ethnomologist wants to collect a new batterfly, only - we don't kill the object, we don't possess it exclusively. Does it give us free right to possess everything we see? Can we be possessed by others in equal degree as well? My Lisbon experiment on breaking the privacy was a try to answer the question. In this case I was attracted not by this man in St. Petersburg as a person, but by a slice of light, which made his existence into a stage performance. He doesn't have any logical nor legal reasons to protest against filming on the street. His only reason is to protest against becoming a passive object. It is his attempt to show the independent will to exist, outside my camera. He wanted to exist as a human, not as an object (while for me, outside my camera view he doesn't exist, that's a colonizing strategy). This eternal dualism, struggle made me stop wanting to be a documentary observer. a firm structure of time, a given grid, which we can take power over - slice it into the pieces as we want, and use them to support our own constructions. The subject of time is separated from the viewer by another grid - it’s the time of the film. And normally, we wouldn’t question that time, that grid is always present. Why then I do have such inclination to break this grid, to interfer into the reality of slicing the time?.. --

Washing machine is one of the devices that is invented in order to free our time. Instead of having to wash with hands, we can stare how it’s done by others. It’s like riding in a train - you don’t need to do anything. Life speeds up, but does it mean that our time becomes more free?

After my washing powder was finished, I put there a shower gel. The result was unexpected - everything was in foam. The foam leaked trhough the holes. I had to put some paper in the hole, and after solving the disaster I decided to film the seemingly peaceful process.

My son touches the piano for the first time in his life. It’s new and fresh to him - he doesn’t know how to make a sound, but he does it. We can learn things and be stuck in schemes. Or we can be creative like children. Both strategies can work.

making first doll

I started making the dolls as I thought that manual work can release the intellectual tension, by just simple making. I had incredible experience of getting into his head.I know that his dolls were ugly - I knew that before. I didn't try to make mine resemble his dolls. I just tried to make them as beautiful as I could.... And they became exactly like his dolls!! And through that I understood that they are the most beautiful in the world - and the only possibility to make them.
