On the 8th day of Pride, I say to y'all, Be as true to yourself as you safely can be. The only child of Cher and Sonny, Chaz Bono is the first trans person many of us have known of. I know he was for me. He had been famous before his transition, partly for his famous parents. In 1995, while he still identified as a woman, he publicly identified himself as a lesbian in The Advocate; he had been outed several years before in tabloids and rumor. This coming out caused a lot of controversy in public and private. His mother, Cher, even kicked him out of the house when she learned that he was a lesbian. They quickly reconciled and she has been supportive of him ever since. In 2009, his publicist announced that he had been transitioning to live as a man since 2008. He had been struggling with his gender identity since he was very young. He finished his transition the following year, in 2010. His transition brought a lot of positive attention to trans people.
