Read how a dinner turned into my dating app, #Cheekd on Business First Louisville... Lori Cheek was out to dinner in New York City with a colleague when he did something that changed the course of her career. "He slipped a business card to a woman with 'Want to have dinner?' written on the back of it," Cheek recalled. "He left with a date, but I left with a business idea." Cheek said she couldn't stop thinking about how to remove the "business" from the business card. Cheek, a Taylorsville native, had been in New York for 16 years, working in architecture and design — "until I had this lightbulb moment about dating," she said. That's how the first iteration of Cheekd was born. The idea was to take the average business card and make it into a dating card, with a code to type in online to find information about the person who handed off the card. In the pre-cell-phone era, it was a way to get in touch without giving out personal information, such as an address. "It was like online dating before online dating," she said. "I knew I needed this, and so many other people were having these problems of how to meet people." Since then, Cheekd has morphed into a free phone app. It uses Bluetooth technology to foster hyper-local connections, making "missed connections obsolete," Cheek said. If you pass someone who meets your criteria on the train, in traffic or while walking around, the app will give a ping and Cheekd users will be able to check out who the missed connection is and decide whether to make contact on the app. Both parties do have to be Cheekd users. "I feel like technology has ruined the way that people are meeting," Cheek said. "In the days before smart phones, people had to walk up and say, 'Hey, can I buy you a drink?' But no one does that anymore." She said that Cheekd will help with that. "Just put your phone down, and the love of your life could be sitting across the bar," Cheek said. "With our app, it makes people look up and pay attention to what’s passing by them." Cheek is one of two keynote speakers at the National Association of Women Business Owner's second annual Business in the Bluegrass Symposium next Tuesday.
