In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
If you've been reading my blog this past week, you'll know the winter garden is in. Last week I did a post for each of the four raised beds if you'd like a preview of veggies to come in the next few months.
And with the new beginnings, there's not much to harvest.
The crush of strawberry guavas subsides with perhaps twenty percent of the crop remaining. I'm breathing a sigh of relief after an intense month of gathering and processing. Here's part of the most recent batch. The larger container (3.5 cups) will make 8 half pints of guava jam.
These are some of the earlier 'Gordon' apples. I used the largest one last night for dinner.
Here's my adaptation of the original Moosewood's Cheese Beans, sans Monterey jack cheese (added after the picture so the apples would show). Simple ingredients combine deliciously for an autumn meal: kidney beans, red onion, apple, tomatoes, white wine, chili powder, dry mustard, salt and pepper.
And absent my own garden produce, I ordered a Farmers' Market Box--this week a bevy of mostly local, mostly organic vegetables for $20, delivered by Specialty Produce to our group at work. Check the link for details if you live in San Diego. You can also see what was in the box.
Enough flowers persist in the garden for a seasonal bouquet and I am happily settled into autumn.
