About a week ago, I got to see Cheikh Lô live in Oslo. Basically me and a large part of the Senegambaian diaspora. It was one of the most intense live music experiences of my life.
They played for 150 minutes straight, and it was about as groovy as you should expect from a band with four percussionists on stage.
His albums are great, but they are often considered a slightly more poppy, popularized and internationaized version of his local mbalax, mixed with a diverse bag of his Afro-Cuban influences.
This was that, and … not that. This was grrovy and funky and intense and quite overwhelming. It was also very, very, VERY dancable.
