I’m watching through This Is Not A Drill: A Hypothetical Crisis in the South China Sea since Chen Hong, the Professor of Australian Studies whose visa was recently cancelled on national security grounds, was on the panel.

It turns out to be a roleplay/wargaming of a FONOP gone wrong, with Chen acting as the Chinese ambassador. I didn’t really get a better understanding of him since his role was to describe what actions China might take in a crisis, but it was pretty chilling to hear Gareth Evans suggest in 2018 that Australia’s good relations with China mean we’d be able to help de-escalate the situation.

Evans said that Australia would be trusted enough by both sides that when we told China and the US that their shows of force and inflammatory rhetoric were unhelpful, they’d take us seriously. Given the past year, that’s probably no longer the case.
