But the ambient noise being part of the original voice note recording doesn't make sense because effects have been applied to only the voice which you wouldn't be able to do unless they were recorded separately

that’s what makes me think the explanation of “i was playing guitar and recording it and i happened to catch this conversation happening in the background and it goes perfectly with the song” isn’t what we’re supposed to think about when we listen to it. because it doesn’t sound like that. 

if the song had been put together to make it sound like a conversation happening in the background it would be a completely different experience. 

Minnie Ripperton’s Lovin’ You has birds chirping all the way through the track. The story she told was that when they originally recorded the demo they played it back and realised there was a bird singing in the background. When they finally recorded it properly in a studio they realised that the song didn’t sound right without it.

I know that the bird sounds on the record isn’t the bird that was actually caught incidentally on their demo, but when i hear her sing Stay with me while we grow old; and we will live each day in springtime against the backdrop of chattering birdsong i feel like i’m sat at her kitchen table in early may with the windows thrown open wide and the sun streaming down onto us.  

the story about the serendipitous birdsong is what makes Lovin’ You charming instead of contrived. i image the voicemail story serves this exact function for Cherry.
