Two-Lane Blacktop is one of my favorite films of all time. The idea of the road (Route 66 in this case) as a metaphor for both excitement and loneliness greatly appeals to me. Also, souped-up muscle cars zooming across the bare bones American landscape in widescreen never looked any better. In the film, our near-silent characters of the Driver and the Mechanic along with a hitchhiking Girl challenge the enigmatic GTO to a race to D.C. What’s at stake? The winner keeps the loser’s ride. However, they end up drifting aimlessly on a road to nowhere, making occasional stops in places that we don’t really see today. Two Lane Blacktop, directed by cult movie maverick Monte Hellman, is an existential art film disguised as drive-in fare. These Mexican lobby cards, each measuring 11″ x 14″ like their U.S. counterparts, are duotones that lend a moody vibe.
