song du jour: amateur love.say you're mine
for this edition of twin city tuesday, we're going to bend the rules a bit (because i can and why not, eh?). the band you see above is not from the twin cities, in fact, they aren't even from minnesota. as a matter of fact, they aren't even a band anymore and when they were a band, they were from across the border in nearby eau claire, wisconsin (close enough).
amateur love hasn't existed for almost ten years. all members have moved on (you may recognize brad and phil cook of megafaun and brian moen of peter wolf crier). so why provide them with the platform of publicity that a twin city tuesdays feature provides (just go with it, please)? because they are the first of what is a pretty cool project from justin vernon (who else). j vern started up his own label, chigliak records, not to discover new talent, but rather to unearth tunes that were never fortunate enough to find a wider audience and then give those artists a re-release in hopes that their music finds new ears. while justin vernon has gone onto fame and fortune, ten years ago in eau claire, according to him, it was clear who the better songwriter was.
that was josh scott, frontman of amateur love.
it's all aquatic, the only release from the band, first hit the streets of eau claire in 2003, and today hits itunes and record stores across the country. one of the best things about watching this video? you are witnessing the earliest and rawest moments of a music scene that would give birth to multiple artists who would end up touring the world, from one of the most unsuspecting places, a little town in western wisconsin. check it out.
Here's a song from the band Amateur Love. They are part of Justin Vernon's new label, Chigliak. Enjoy!
Justin Vernon of Bon Iver Announces First Release on His New Label, Chigliak...
Chigliak is a new imprint of Jagjaguwar that is curated by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. The label has been in the works since at least 2010, when Vernon told Pitchfork that its first release would be a reissue of It's All Aquatic, a 2003 record from the Eau Claire, Wisconsin band Amateur Love. The label has now confirmed that the reissue will be out May 22 digitally and on 12" vinyl, accompanied by a download of the band's previously unreleased "Ev Sessions" from 2004. "Con/A Sewer/Cat" by Amateur Love // It's All Aquatic (2003 // re-issue 2012)
If there's one thing that I dislike about the current state of music blogging, it's the ever reaching grab for the newest, hottest, most underground tracks without even the quickest of looks over the shoulder at what might have been missed in months or years passed. Luckily from time to time, an old forgotten album that I've championed to people over the years gets a re-issue from a solid source and it offers people a chance to look at it anew without having to take time out of their newnewnew searches. Amateur Love's excellent 2003 release "It's All Aquatic" is one such release. A batch of vivid, noise pop and dream pop gems with an electronic edge from a band out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Luckily, the other famous guy in Eau Claire (Bon Iver's Justin Vernon) has an imprint label (Chigliak) with Jagjaguwar and it's first release is his old friend's album, "It's All Aquatic", remastered and ready for a new generation of listens. In the event that you've missed out on Amateur Love in the past, now's a good chance to catch up, and this is the first remastered taste of the album in the form of jittery, power noise pop jam "Con/A Sewer/Cat". Highest recommendation.
* Amateur Love's "It's All Aquatic" will be re-issued May 22nd.
