FW&D 409 Vernon, Tex by John B Charles Via Flickr: The last main line steam operation on the FW&D was a combination Steam Train Excursion - Football Special operated from Dallas to Childress, Texas on August 15, 1959. The power was FW&D 2-8-2 No 409, with an extra tender for a water car and SD-7 859. The train left Dallas early in the morning and made stops at various stations along the way to pick up passengers. The trip was well advertised so local people also turned out just to see the last steam run. It returned to Dallas well after dark with diesel power. I was a passenger on the train all the way from Dallas to Childress and return. Here we see the train making it's only photo runby at Vernon, Texas, late in the afternoon.
