Such a good episode! But also so many new questions! Why didn't empusa want sophodra/fescue to follow the other nymphs? What's the difference between a pod and an ooth? What's big sophodras deal?

Gregorsa explained what an ooth is in the notes for the previous episode! As for generation pods, that remains to be seen. If you're familiar with mantises, you might be able to guess why he didn't want Sophodra alone with another nymph....

Happy to! One prehistoric bat, Desmodus draculae, a giant vampire bat from Central and South America seems to have lived into the Holocene. The discovery of subfossils points to this, including a tooth attributed to the species that is dated to 1650 A.D..

Great new episode! A few questions, is rose sensitive to the light because she's not used to it, or is it a tarantula/spider thing? And is sophodras house being covered in flytraps normal for houses in the big city, or a personal quirk of hers (and uh, how do the flies feel about that)?

Tarantulas are normally nocturnal, and Rose was raised in an environment that was always dark (pink represents smell vision!), so a bit of both.

In Formicosa City, flytraps are used as doors. Covering your house in flytraps is a little weird, though. Soph does it as a way to make it easy to catch stray gubs that get out, as well as a way to easily grow traps for the job. (As a mantis, she also likes that they match her claws and make it easier for her to blend in with her surroundings.)

Since flytraps have such common use as doors, flies wouldn't find it intimidating (and their word for them does not translate to "flytrap" at all!). However, they would find Sophodra's house weird, in the sense that it would be weird to walk into anyone's house and see something like a bunch of little open cages everywhere.

I might be dumb but I dont understand what rose is doing in the most recent episode :( also what is sophodras view on how smart humans are? I would guess she thinks more highly of them intelligence wise than other macrovolutes, especially since they apparently can make explosives, but does she think they're sentient at all?

Rose is working in a factory! It's pretty abstract macrovolute plant tech, so don't worry that you didn't get it--I'll be having Rose mention some stuff next episode!

She has a much higher view of them than the average macrovolute (who doesn't think they even have brains at all), but not even Sophodra is entirely sure how smart she thinks humans are. She might be afraid to admit it.

That said, no one is impressed by the human ability to make fire or explosives. At least, not any more than we're impressed by things like spiders making webs, or bombardier beetles generating explosions. Firegubs (humans) make fire! It's in the name!!!

Kirk gushes eagerly as he shows Ava a photo featuring several of the creatures, their bright orange fur a stark contrast to their patterned wings. Orange also ran along their inner wing membranes but sharply cut off to a solid black, making them one of the most colourful species in the bat family. "There aren't any blue bats I'm aware of but this is one of the few that comes anywhere close to how vibrant your feathers are!"
