January 2016, Day 11, Chiyootori v Shodai.

If even the tippiest of your tippy-toes touches the dirt outside the ring, you lose. Moments before Chiyootori pushes Shodai out, he stepped half an inch too far after Shodai’s tsuki to his right side. You can see the mark left in the soft dirt at the ring’s edge, and you can see the ring judge seated at the far right of the screen raise his hand when he notices. Ref makes the right call.

January 2016, Day 8, Chiyootori v Sokokurai.

Sokokurai keeps finding himself in some epic struggles. He locks up with Chiyootori in a pretty even left-hand under position until he manages to get his overhand grip on the right side. Chiyootori knows he’s at a disadvantage now, so he tries to work his right hand inside Sokokurai’s left to even things out. But Sokokurai clamps down with his left hand and blocks the move. Sokokurai uses his clear advantage to work his larger opponent to the edge, and by the time they get there Chiyootori has lost his grip on the left side and can’t defend Sokokurai’s overarm throw.

November 2015, Day 8. Chiyootori v Mitakeumi

Mitakeumi has had a rough couple of days. Yesterday, he gets pancaked by Gagamaru, and today Chiyootori takes him out. Mitakeumi is still really young, but he's showing good lateral movement, staying really low, trying to stay aggressive. He just happens to lose his belt grip at the last moment, and doesn't have enough leverage to throw Chiyootori at the edge. (Also, Todd, see how Chiyootori helps him up at the end?)
