Obese have 'no choice' but to gorge on sugary drinks because they're 'socially deprived'

A leading health expert has praised the Tesco Ribena ban
Professor Graham MacGregor, of the Action on Sugar group, blasted the soft drink industry for targeting people who are unaware of the dangers of sugar.
His attack came after Tesco controversially announced they are banning certain brands of Ribena and other sugary drinks – causing outrage with customers fed up with the “ridiculous” move.
But while the supermarke’s decision was widely criticised online, Professor MacGregor today praised Tesco for the “great news”.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, Professor MacGregor, of the Wolfson Institute at the Queen Mary University of London, said he could not understand why there has been such a backlash.
He called for a “focus” on tackling products with excessive amounts of sugar – and claimed that people who are obese are overwhelmed by the soft drink industry.
He said: “There has got to be a focus. You’ve got to realise that people who get obese are the ones who are more socially deprived, who don’t have a choice.
“The soft drink industry spent billions of pounds advertising to people like that, and that overwhelms them. Their children and they are all obese and they drink very large amounts of sweetened soft drinks.”

Tesco announced they were banning certain Ribena products
From September 7, Tesco will no longer stock small cartons and lunch box-sized added sugar drinks of Ribena and Capri-Sun, as well as all Rubicon products.
Prof. MacGregor, who leads a group of specialists who are concerned with sugar and the effects on health, added: “As I understand it, these small cartons are particularly targeted at children for lunch boxes.
“We’ve had a very good report come out about sugar clearly demonstrating that sweetened soft drinks do lead to tooth decay, obesity in children and later in life, type 2 diabetes directly – rather than just through calories.
I don’t quite see what the argument is about
Professor Graham MacGregor
He continued: “They haven’t banned it, it’s still available in large bottle sizes. So I don’t quite see what the argument is about.”
Following the Ribena announcement from Tesco, hundreds of customers took to Twitter to slam the “hypocritical” company – with some threatening to boycott the supermarket all together.
One user tweeted: “I was gonna buy a Ribena but Tesco don’t sell it cause it causes obesity so I guess I’ll have a coke, fags and wotsits cause they must be fine.”
While another wrote: “Tesco stops selling Ribena to tackle childhood obesity?! So processed meat, Coke, chocolate, crisps & pizza next yeh?”
Another tweet read: “If tesco stop selling ribena then I’m never shopping there again.”
Tesco has been contacted by Express.co.uk for comment.
