Splatoon doodles I made as a warm up?
《Modern Scrolls #8.5》
So this is a continuation of my last modern scroll, where I talked about the meaning behind popular Squid Sisters songs. Today I will be tackling the broad genre of Splatbands from Inkopolis Plaza. Most of these albums came out in 2015 ME but some did come out in later dates.
Lets get started and learn the meanings behind popular Splatband songs!
Squid Squad
Splattack - this song was the pioneer of the new wave of music made throughout Inkadia. 2015 saw the release of turf wars to the general public. Beforehand they were for professionals only. With this new sport, there needed to be new music to go along with it. Older music used to be around 5 minutes long, to fit with the professional ranked battles on TV. So, when "Splattack" came out, being only 3 minutes long, it was chosen as the perfect theme tune of the new generation. The song is about the rules of "Splatoon", which is the term given to the new ideology of turf wars and inkling culture.
Ink or Sink - The second song on their album "Fresh Kids" is seemingly more shallow in meaning than its predecessor. It repeats one line throughout the song, which encapsulates the meaning perfectly "Its Ink or Sink." You either play turf wars and are with the time, or you're nothing.
Seaskape - This was actually Squid Squads first song, made before Splattack. This song was made when they heard the news that "Splatoon" was becoming more popular and that turf battles would be opened to the general public. This song doesn't have many lyrics, but apprently Ichiya improvised the few lines he had, which lead to the nonsensical line that was "covered in ink, oh Splatoon" which became a joke among the bands fans.
Kraken Up - This song is the most random song in their album. Its meant to represent the power high you get while transformed as a kraken. This song also features some "lol random XD" lyrics such as "Tiny horse that is pretty cool" and "hygeine counts" these lyrics were not random however, and were supposed to repesent how your mind scrambles to different thoughts all at once.
Metalopod - This song became an anthem amongst rebelling teens in inkopolis for many years. The song is about a group of teenagers sneaking into blackbelly skatepark after dark to play turf wars illegally. The song was a hit with teens who started to do exactly that. This song is the reason why Splatfests are held at night.
Now or Never! - This song was the original Now or Never. They released this song last as Squidforce commisioned them to make a song exactly 1 minute long to play near the end of turf wars. The song tells you that there only 1 minute left and you gotta solve the problems to win!
ABXY (chirpy chips)
Friend List - This song tells the story of two friends who paint the town blue together. One of the friends is very reluctant, but with a bit of ✨️turf war magic ✨️ he agrees and they "yell out blue". This song is the first to feature reoccuring characters in Chirpy Chips songs; Two friends/lovers who are constantly fighting but still have an unbreakable bond. Its unclear who its about, but fans have always suspected it was between Harmony and Clash, and their opposing personalities.
Quick Start - This song is about the pair mentioned before going out on a date to a festival, however both are really anxious and self-concious, so when they try to talk to eachother it ends up in disater, so they both decide to "just shut up and enjoy the scenery".
High Tide Era
Hooked - This song is about a shady dealer in an alleyway talking about the good ol' days and how inklings came to be, but now he has no money and does whatever to get some. This song is reportedly about Spyke, after the band saw him upon arrival to Inkopolis.
Sucker Punch - This song doesn't have a very deep meaning, its just saying that sometimes shooting bullies and losers doesn't work, and you just gotta sucker punch 'em in the face. This song became a punk anthem in inkopolis, and also resulted in many people getting punched in the face.
Extras
Ika Jamaika ~ Cala Marley - This song is just really chill lobby music with inspiration from the tiny island of Jamaika. Bob Dub, or Cala Marley, is regarded as the most famous Dub singer in inkopolis.
Lookin' Fresh ~ DJ Lee Fish - The music that played in the shops in booyah base. It too is a chill rap song about looking your best and being unique!
Cap'n Cuttlefish Theme - Now this song is actually very old. Back in military days, each captain would have their own entrance song, so that their leigons would be able to hear them from far away. It helped give status to captains, as the more battles you won, the more popular your song would be with the local towns and cities. Everyone in Calamari county knows this song now.
Turquoise October
I'm not a big expert on all things octoling, so I'll hand this over to my friends Amillye! (She's an octoling, so cool!!)
Eight Legged Advance - Octoling music, especially battle music, is designed to be off-putting to inklings. The sporadic sounds are supposed to throw them off guard, and our signature military sound (the "bam-bam-ba-da-bam") scares them away from fighting us, and gives octarians hope. This song is a classic marching song, not made to be listened to for enjoyment, but for military.
Tentacular Circus - This song was made for what inklings call "silly goofy" reasons. We octarians do in fact have fun sometimes. Turquoise October used sounds from classic octarian carnivals and turned it into a song to dance to. It is about how stupid inklings are. Sorry.
Cephaloparade - This is a classic dance song. We dance at discos to this music. But this song added additional sounds to scare inklings off. We all sing during the "climbing" part. Its about climbing Mount Nantai, but then realising octarians are much cooler anyway.
Tornado Shuffle - This song scares me. We found samples of old human radio-scripts. And we remixed them into a scary reminder song that tells octolings to evacuate the area when battles get tough. I don't know english, but Taywoomy says it might be from a plane crash, with the captain saying "danger" and "june 10th". Those words sound scary so...
Octoling Rendezvouz - This song is more modern. With help from octoling troopers, Turquoise October composed a song that was good for the youth to train to. It has many sounds of octoling girls panting and screaming not to be killed. It gives troops motivation to not be like them.
Octoweaponry - Many octolings songs lack lyrics, but this conveys so much with just sound. It is about the inkling world crumbling down under the power of our great leaders. Octo troopers are chanting powerful words while the inklings suffer horrible deaths, and get crushed underground. Fun fact, I did the guitar solo in this song :>
I Am Octavio - DJ Octavio - its about him spitting down sick fires about how he's going to change the above world once he uses the zapfish, and how he's going to kill Tay- uh, agent 3. It gets more and more insane, and I remember everyone had to help make this song. It was a community effort.
