Jesus' last words were 'It is finished'. In the original language, Jesus' phrase is a single word, tetelesti. Literally, it means, 'it is complete'. This is not a desperate cry of self-pity - not I am finished, but it is finished. It's the word a builder might use as he places the last roof slate on a new house. Or something a couple might say when they finally pay off their mortgage after 25 years. Tetelesti: the debt is paid, it is done, it is finished.
