What an amazing and inspirational session to end the Kendal Mountain Literature Festival, hosting the session with Anita Sethi and discussing her book “I Belong Here” A Journey Along The Backbone of Britain. Important and powerful writing discussing Racist Hate Crime, Mental Health, Nature, Reclamation and Belonging, a must read for all to understand the complexities of this work. Some very powerful readings by Anita and a great discussion. What was disappointing was the lack of interest in this session from People of Colour. Back in the day, mid 80’s Winter Skills course in @snowdonianationalpark , with outdoor education youth workers. My love for the outdoors began late 70’s and life as a BAME practitioner in the 80’s, the likes of @backbonecic and myself having met in the mid 90’s and have highlighted the issues of racism in the sector, but still lots of work to do. Racism in the Outdoors There are many barriers for BAME people in the outdoors, a key one is that the outdoors is seen as an Exclusive White Club, steeped in RACISM at all levels. Here's a short extract of an example from local businesses in a National Park: "Guests just arrived. Supposed to be 3pm they are relatives of those we saw on the beach... scarves round their head OMG what will the neighbours say." The group educated the individual who owned the business. "BAME tourists checking in to their accommodation was asked for ID, white guests were not" These are just two of many examples of Racism I have come across in the Outdoors. This is the daily lived experience of BAME people in accessing the Outdoors, from individuals to service providers and businesses. Feedback from FA who attend outdoor residential as a young person in the 80's. Shows the important contribution of a positive outdoor experience to the development of young people. "In brief the impact of several opportunities to take part in organised “away from home” outdoor activities can’t be easily measured. It was many years ago but a truly formative experience which led in adulthood to myself running similar activities for my children and others. The original experience shaped and built my confidence to do many non traditional activities including a successful career in the emergency services. The key point was having someone from your own community leading on something that is normally not associated with BAME groups. It opened our eyes and connected us not only to the great outdoors and environment but to people from other communities. Cannot stress how important outdoor activity led by people like Mohammed are. The positive impact is life changing and the change goes way beyond the actual event. It gets you to understand that you are a lot more capable than you think you are. The experience is never forgotten."
