what about a really hated movie you love?
Ooooh I have PLENTY! I also have whole directors, actually LMAOOOO Premises first: I usually struggle with understanding whether a movie I loved is hated or not. I can understand the opposite scenario because if I see many people praise a movie I didn't like, then it feels wrong and I can tell it's because people loved it but I'm not aligned with them. HOWEVER, I find it difficult to tell the other way around because: if I love a movie, I LOOOOVE it and kind of become numb about any reaction lol takes me a lot to process the general opinion on it because it takes me a lot to process my overwhelming joy toward it in the first place :) so the movies I'll mention are some of those I'd gathered controversial, ambiguous feedback about. Not necessarily 100% dislike. But I had definitely heard multiple things about them that I absolutely did not agree with! So here you go!
Anything from Lina Wertmuller, I enjoy. I'm not sure if her movies are really hated, though. Through my life, I encountered very schismatic and ambiguous opinions on her cinematography. I would say she's quite divisive! I personally love her movies, though :)
As a Film major I can't NOT mention the best worst director ever, too. Sir Ed Wood is another one whose cinematography I genuinely enjoy!!
• Freaky Friday (1976): I wouldn't say it's actually hated per se but it's definitely rejected and left out when remakes are brought up :( Which is a bummer 'cause I LOVE the OG version!
• Police Academy (1984-89; first six movies): watched all the first six movies growing up because my father is obsessed with them and he wouldn't mind me watching soooo kinda personal lol mostly love it cuz it's fun and it's a peaceful memory of mine
• Home Alone (1990) & Home Alone 2 - Lost in NY (1992): same as Police Academy, I'm pretty sure it's tradition, childhood, and comfort-related, but I love these two movies. I see why and how they can be disliked, though. Sometimes I do, too. But it's still something that evokes a safe feeling in me for personal reasons.
• Call Me By Your Name (2017): this is NOT about pedophilia!!!! And this is NOT problematic!!!! If this is problematic, then why objectifying women or portraying toxic heterosexual relationships is not? See the double standard here? Why do people demand non-heterosexual relationships to be super healthy otherwise it's proven how heterosexuality is the only way?! And why do people expect from non-heterosexual relationships the same things they'd expect from a heterosexual relationship and if it's slightly different then it's odd hence weird hence wrong?????Shut up shut up SHUT UUUUUUP!!! Anyway, beside that, *I* really can't shut up about the fact that this movie is actually pretty accurate of what it's like to be a gay adolescent, who's yet to have their gay awakening, in the Italian countryside (of 40 years ago, sure. Not only, though). It's set in a rural, country area in 1980s Tuscany but it depicts perfectly well how sexuality (especially homosexuality) was dealt with (or, NOT dealt with), hence, how the ones who'd feel like they diverged from what they were taught their whole life had to find their way through themselves on their own (or through adults who had experienced the same things growing up). They'd explore their inner self, often finding out truths that they weren't anticipating at all, far from what they'd expected they'd find. There's a whole essay I could write historicizing the sexual element(s) this movie brings up BUT I don't wanna type a long-ass answer to this ask, which was NOT about my opinion on CMBYN anyway lol forgive me and my queer studies and queer history minor here
• The Whale (2022): I feel not that many people caught the actual meaning + I found it extremely symbolic and I appreciated said symbolism BUT amongst all people who'd watched it and told me about it (who were quite a few tbf!) only ONE actually reported a whole symbolic analysis that felt aligned with my opinion, or at least in that direction of depth (?)
• The Pale Blue Eye (2022): I heard disappointing disappointed opinions on this one :') I loved it but apparently it's not a shared feeling
