Wanting and Willing: Chapter 2, Paragraphs 1-4
“Um.” Logan clutches the dish towel tightly around his hand, trying not to be distracted by the throbbing pain, the blossoming blood, or the way Alex’s attention is completely zeroed in on him. Or Alex’s long pearly white fangs, which are still fully visible. He’s heard vampire fangs are retractable, like cat claws, but he’s not sure of the exact mechanisms. The firm wooden kitchen chair feels like it’s wobbling under Logan, which is probably due to some combination of blood loss and the shock of this sudden revelation. But he regains his senses enough to say, “I didn’t… know the knowledge was there to escape?”
Alex frowns, still looking completely nonplussed. He seems just as confused about this whole situation as Logan, as if a human not being aware of something is equally surprising as an F1 driver revealing himself to be a vampire. His tongue flickers out to lick one last drop of blood off his upper lip, quickly and self-consciously. “Did James not give you that briefing after your contract renewal?”
“Uh… I wasn’t really briefed on a lot,” Logan says. The fact that James Vowles didn’t take the opportunity to hear himself talk for several meetings’ worth of updates gave Logan the impression that the team principal is seriously considering giving up on him, but the length of the briefing he did receive was unconscionable given how little substance it contained, so maybe that’s for the best. “So, um, no, “Alex is a vampire” didn’t make it onto the agenda.”
Alex and Logan stare at each other for a few long moments, mutually perplexed.
