Favorite movie of the 80s?
the big chill (1983) might be my favorite movie of all time!
it's such a classic! amazing actors early in their careers (kevin kline, glenn close, jeff goldblum, so many more!!), the reunion of dear friends and deconstructing grief and the meaning or absence of meaning in life and growing up and who we were vs who we are now is just!!!!! so much!!!!!
i can't believe i loved it before i went to college and then i joined a co-ed fraternity that indeed made me ask "how much love, sex, fun, and friendship" can a group of people take... and we get together now as adults, thankfully under less tragic circumstances (the frame of the story is that they have reunited after the death of one of their friends from suicide).
it's SUCH a master class in characters. it really is just Hanging Out so there's no action or anything, but i think for people who love fanfic (focusing on character and emotion and deconstructing Events that have happened before the story starts) and the concept of nostalgia (even though this isn't MY era of nostalgia and probably isn't yours)... it's so so good. if you love it let's talk about it please!! if you hate it don't tell me.
edit: thank you to @spikeygorgeous for reminding me that i didn't mention the soundtrack absolutely makes this movie. perhaps soundtrack of all time?????

i was looking at the lower decks tag and seeing you describe Red Dwarf as "MASH meets Lower Decks" made me drop EVERYTHING and immediately open firefox to watch Red Dwarf
eyoooo. I'm on season 3 now (I'm sure you've seen that there aren't that many episodes of that great a length per season, so it's quite easy to watch).
it's sneaking up on me slower than either of the other two shows, in that I often get quite melancholy and have to pause with shows like this, where it's very limited in characters and space. I cannot tell you why that is. maybe because it is actually quite a melancholy premise.
however s3 I think is opening up the world a tad more, which is exciting to me, and I imagine that'll continue to happen.
the sex farce part of it is often hit or miss with me, but then, it is on MASH too. it's very funny to me that it literally is a show about people working not just the equivalent of lower decks, but bottom of the rung, and could immediately pinpoint the mariner-boimler dynamic (of course, in some ways very different). made me think that someone who's writing for LD may be inspired by it, although they diverge quite heavily from there on out. and then it's very bold that red dwarf immediately fucks around with its premise (I did not know that that would happen, never mind that it would happen in episode one).
am still endlessly charmed by a liverpudlian in space, when do you ever see that happening? c'mon star trek, we've had enough RP, it's time for some midlands/northern (or welsh... have we had welsh on star trek yet, I don't think so. that'd be doctor who).

Now that my skills have finally started matching up with my wants, I'm looking forwards to knitting some jumpers for my family.
You mention the ableism in the comment about ADHD and object permanence, but I was also taken aback in that article snippet about queer people living their teens in their twenties, as if that is a silly decision they made and not a result of societal homophobia and hurtful experiences? queer people not having the childhoods they wanted is a problem, but the article blames queer people for growing up? What?
Yeah, that was another inclusion that seemed HELLA careless imo
The concept of a "second adolescence" in terms of the queer experience isn't "I just want an excuse to run around and pretend I'm a child" AT ALL. It's based in the fact that people do a lot of maturing and learning how to be their own person and socialize and such when they are in their teens and how queer people are DENIED those CRUCIAL lessons because we are often ostracized from our communities. You can't learn how to date and make friends or get a first job or foster a sense of individuality or how to love who you are if you are constantly afraid that people finding out you're queer is going to get you killed OR if you are out and no one wants anything to do with you because of it.
And that's not even getting into the same subject re: victims of trauma. My teenage years were NOT normal and I was in survival mode like...fucking all the time, and it means I didn't learn a lot of the shit I was supposed to, or I learned it wrong, and so I've had to spend my 20s playing catch up. (And also I kinda like buying myself childish things sometimes bcs I've had to act like an adult my ENTIRE LIFE and sometimes a stuffed animal or lego set or video game makes me feel a little better.)
The second adolescence isn't about being free of responsibility, it's about learning how to be a person now that you have the freedom to do so, and the author clearly doesn't get that at all.
