in a round of me projecting onto sam, i think any time he gets raped before the cage he would also take penetration almost dehabilitating? overwhelming? to the point that he cannot move, doesn't even process that he should or could move and instead just freezes once they have broken him in, no longer trying to get them off him, rather getting away from the shame. he would chant nos and don'ts and stops so he knows he didnt want it and that it is, actually rape.

and i think post cage sam just agrees to everything even though he doesn't reallly want to. it's a vow and a noose lucifer idly keeps on him even to this day yakno.

Sam who fights and spits and kicks and screams the first time. and he's an incredible fighter but Brady seems almost supernaturally strong and no one hears him and Dean is across the country and Sam can't get away. maybe he drank too much, maybe Brady gave him something. the next morning, they act like nothing happened

he starts out kicking and screaming with the next man too (prolly one of the Benders). he thinks after that he could've gotten away, he has the skill, but his body just... stalled. his voice stops working and his hands stop clawing. even his vision and hearing aren't quite right

then it's women mostly and he can cope with it ok when Lilith kisses him on the mouth. he says "no" and "don't" and "I can't" but he copes ok when Ruby puts him inside her

after the cage, he's so compliant. doesn't even protest. takes off his clothes and rolls over when he's told because no one can rape him if he doesn't ever say no

If you like the imagery/framing of being consumed, might I recommend circlusion? There's a whole article on it as a term and it made my brain explode and reform more queer and trans

I hadn't heard that term before (for those who haven't heard it, it means "to surround or wrap" and is meant as a complementary action to penetration, i.e. being penetrated but framed as an active thing rather than passive), but looking into it I do like the framing. I'm a big fan of ways to frame penetration (a thing I enjoy) as less heteronormative (since I do not enjoy heteronormativity), so I might start using that term more. It also is in my opinion superior to other proposed terms I have heard such as "engulf." Thanks for the suggestion!

Listening to music is inherently a sensual exchange. Music enters the ear, causes pleasure, and inspires identification in the listener, who is not merely a passive participant in the encounter. The listener joins the singer in the song's ambiguous and ephemeral space, and is changed by the act of attentive, emotional listening. "The listener's inner body is illuminated, opened up: a singer doesn't expose her own throat, she exposes the listener's interior," wrote Koestenbaum. "Her voice enters me, makes me a 'me', an interior, by virtue of the fact that I have been entered. The singer, through osmosis, passes through the self's porous membrane, and discredits the fiction that bodies are separate, boundaried packages." Anyone who has loved music has felt what Koestenbaum describes. The singer's voice enters the listener and becomes the listener's voice. The fan hears a beloved song and believes she is singing the words of the song, that they were written for her to sing. The division between artist and fan dissolves in the moment of impassioned listening, and with it goes the division between genders. In music, people are not separate; they cannot be divided up into two discrete categories.

the circulation of circlusion

‘Circlusion’ is a word coined recently by Bini Adamczak to mean the opposite of penetration - being around and against a thing, enclosing it, encircling it, moving over it. Doesn’t have to be about sex but I think it is very useful for (re)conceptualising sex and I’m just thinking about how it causes me to think/ feel differently.  The article linked above was published July 2016, and I tried to trace its usage using Google, Tumblr, Instagram. I was surprised it hasn’t had much take-up but unsurprised to see it gaining traction with dancers/ choreographers.

Designation as a word

DANCE/ PERFORMANCE adoption:  Danish dance festival used it as concept (June 2017)

‘Centering around ‘circluding’ dance, thecarrierbag festival is a gathering of local and international dance artists, hosted by DANSEatelier. The festival includes three days of hangout, curated inserts, triggers and hooks, as well as three evenings of performances. This festival is a carrier bag. A bag to carry knowledge (across bodies, texts, temporalities, telepathies and more) in order to re-activate, re-use and re-develop new knowledges. The festival as a bag proposes a way to ‘circlude’, encircle, gather, wrap and curl around dance. It is a wish to use ‘circlusion’, this awesome and newly invented word, to describe a relation to dance. Borrowing ‘circlusion’ from the context of a sexual act, where it refers to the antonym to penetration, it finds ways of relocating the term, in order to strengthen it. Thecarrierbag festival has been thought around two texts: Ursula Le Guin’s ‘The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction’ and Bini Adamczak’s ‘ On Circlusion’. It sets off from feminist ways of being in relation to dance and unfurls a plethora of possibilities.’

The idea of circlusion, proposed in 2016 by communist writer Bini Adamczak to describe the counterside of penetration, informed the genesis of this exhibition. Through that concept, Adamczak shed light on the agency of the penetrated orifice ( the anus circluding the fist, the vagina that circludes the dildo). When artist Maja Malou Lyse crossed paths with Adamczak’s term, she recognized its capacity to disrupt the division into active and passive bodies. This exhibition presents Lyse’s new video work, where she draws from that idea in order to establish a dialogue between the sex-negative feminism of the 80s and the horny visual language of contemporary pop culture; the latest chapter of Fabiana Faleiros’ sculptural research about pleasure and self-knowledge, playfully tracing the colonial violence that brings apart two bodily apertures: the vocal cavity and the asshole; and Matilda Tjäder’s sound landscape, a fictional tale of haunting encounters, ghostly portals and intertwined bodies.

𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐄 engages with circlusion as a speculative exercise – rather than as yet another academic term – an incitement to think from the crack, embrace porosity, listen to the break. Graphic design: Beate Bloch Christensen
