Swamp Harrier or Kahu
Circus approximans
Circus translates into a hawk that circles, while approximans could mean nearest extremity.
Family: Accipitridae (Majority of Raptors)
Fun Fact: “The location of the kahu nest in swampy areas surrounded by tall reeds and other vegetation, provide an element of protection against both predators and the weather.” (Source)
Habitat: They are endemic to wetlands, grasslands, scrublands of Australia, New Zealand, southeastern New Guinea, and South Pacific islands (Fiji, New Caledonia, Tonga, etc.). They are also found near farmlands.
Ecosystem Role: They help keep bird, reptile, and most notably small mammal populations in check (including the invasive rabbit in Australia).
Conservation Status: Least Concern
