Now that the honeymoon phase for my hyperfixation with Gladiator II ended I can talk about what I disliked about the movie, specially compared to the first one. These are loose thoughts btw.

To me, it felt too... hopeful? And I feel like that rags to riches, good guy wins in the end thing doesn't go well with a movie about the Roman Empire, considering the way it crashed and burned.

I feel like Macrinus should've "won", since that's what happened irl, and it would be an interesting shift of expectations. If he had won we'd also get a neat segue into any possible sequels of spin offs with Elagabalus (I imagine a flamboyant empress/emperor with genderqueer elements could make for good television)

I also wished we has seen more of the twins mother, even a passing comment of her being away or something would be enough.

And finally, I've seen people complaining about how disjointed the first movie feels to the second one, and I agree. I think there's untapped potential in exploring what happened between movies, like a miniseries exploring the year of the five emperors and the Severan dynasty.

If you're trying to make an OC for Gladiator II or even just write some fanfic, I highly recommend reading the wikipedia page for the decades of 200's and 210's. There's a lot of information about the common Roman society and some politics, like how female gladiators were banned in 202 AD and how many slaves a middle class Roman owned.

For the Geta and Caracalla fans, you'll find very interesting tidbits about the twins, like how Caracalla named himself after a Germanic tunic (213) and how Geta sorta became emperor before his brother (209).

Also they had beef with Scottish people?? I love discovering new things.

I know I post a lot about Geta and Caracalla but Macrinus was actually one of my favorite characters of the movie

However, Macrinus from real life is also incredibly interesting. Imagine killing the emperor only to rule for A YEAR alongside your 8 YEAR OLD SON and then be dethroned by a 14 year old trans girl who's pretending to be a bastard child of the very same man you killed (she's actually like a cousin or niece of his)

My ideas for a CaraGeta College AU

I'm currently rewatching Gladiator II and it got my gears turning. In this AU Severus would be still alive and the CEO of a huge company, as well as a man dabbling in politics. Both twins are employed there but really don't do much (nepo babies teehee) but due to public backlash they're currently majoring in Economics or Administration or some degree that might give them a smidge of legitimacy in their fathers company.

I imagine Geta is a total overachiever, he wants the best scores and wants a laureate no matter what, while Caracalla simply gets the bare minimum grades to not fail in all of his classes (with Geta's help of course). They do their best to sync up schedules and basically don't really talk to anyone except other rich kids, and everyone thinks they're lowkey creepy.

The only part of college they like are the parties, because they can really splurge - drink a lot, smoke a lot of weed, snort coke and do whatever drugs are available. Caracalla likes the high end stuff and is a barely functional addict.

They have that new money feel to them - only wear the lastest fashion, are always hungover, spend too much with anything they want.

Their father is still abusive even though they're in their twenties, and doesn't let them leave his house, so they're always sneaking out and covering for eachother.

both tumblr and youtube keep servìng me gladiator 2 reviews that are basically that one meme of "this thing that you like sucks" and the reviews i actually read were mostly shit like "its too extravagant! its so far away from the first one!" aka "i hate change and things were better when i was younger"

but the most egregious review i read said the movie was "too woke"

as much as I enjoyed it, you HAVE to consume media critically, and if you have a fucking brain you'll realize that the movie clearly marks how evil someone if by their gender non-conformance and sexuality. like im sorry but did you realize maybe that macrinus and geta and caracalla were all effeminate/queer men and that lucius and acacius, THE GOOD GUYS, were traditionally masculine? did you realize that the movie had a lack of female characters and that both of them died only to motivate the male protagonist? like you can say the shark fight in the coliseum was too silly but this movie was NOT "woke"
