Southbound

"This one is for all you lost souls racing down to redemption, and all you sinners running from your past by heading straight into that pit of darkness up ahead", dedicates radio DJ (Larry Fessenden) to two bloodied men trying to find their way out of a strange town. They soon find out, that no matter which road they choose, it's all going south. Spooky! Southbound is a cleverly woven anthology, consisting of five different stories, with guilt being the main theme. While not all five hit it out of the park, it is a fun watch. I would go as far as to say that this is one of the better anthology series I've seen as of late. I was initially attracted to watch this after having seen the trailer. It seemed like they took a Twilight Zone episode and smashed it together with horror elements. While it wasn't quite what I expected, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of this film. Each installment seamlessly flow into the other, and tie up neatly at the end, which I appreciated. I like that it comes full circle. While not all aspects of the film worked well, the positives outweigh the negatives. "Siren" and "The Accident" are worth the watch alone (stories 2 and 3). The special affects work well at times, but took me out of the scene when they got too close up to the creatures. They are pretty eerie looking from afar though. What the film got most right was the gore. Some of the death scenes are on point, as today's youth says (insert fire and 100 emojis here). Despite some story elements dragging on a bit, the gore is sure to reel you back in. All in all, Southbound is a really fun watch. The film will surely get under your skin cause in the end, what can be scarier being trapped in your own personal hell?
