Although a highschool dropout, Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985) maintained a love of literature throughout his entire life. Before turning to photography at the age of 25, Laughlin was a [mostly unpublished] author and poet, writing predominantly in the style of French Symbolism. Widely accepted as the first true American Surrealist photographer, literature greatly influenced his visual art. If it is indeed influenced by literature, Generally Gothic would like to suggest that the pictured piece takes Oscar Wilde's (1854-1900) 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (1890) as its source of inspiration. What do you think?
