Los Angeles automobile dealer Winslow Felix opened Felix Chevrolet on the corner of 12th and Grand Avenue in 1922. Film maker Pat Sullivan was a friend of Mr. Felix, and he let Mr. Felix adopt the character of Felix the Cat from his studio’s popular 1920s cartoons. The beautiful neon sign pictured above was erected over the dealership’s new location at 3330 S Figueroa Street, at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard, in 1957. Fifty years later, in July of 2007, the sign was declared a historic-cultural monument by the Cultural Heritage Commission of the City of Los Angeles -- that is, until the mayor of Los Angeles stepped in to stop the process, claiming it would be bad for business. The owners of the building and sign promised to keep the sign intact “for future generations,” but in 2012, they replaced the neon with LED lights that failed just ten weeks after installation. Naturally, neon enthusiasts and preservationists are “ pissed,” demanding that the neon tubing be restored, but, so far, nothing has been done.
