Btw, did I mention that Lance was there, watching Jan absolutely dominate everybody on the second solo time trial? Cause he was, and he thought about Jan that, "nobody will be able to beat that dude for ten years."

On this day in TdF history
18th July 1997
On this day Jan Ullrich absolutely destroyed everybody on the second solo time trial, letting the world know why he was the man in yellow.
He even managed to overtake the second placed Virenque, who had started three minutes ahead of him.
Pivenage even jokingly told him to drive past Virenque on the left and give him a little spook. (Jan of course didn't do that)
Also interesting to meantion: unlike his biggest idol, Miguel Indurain, who always had the newest, most aerodinamic equipment possible, Jan showed up rather nonchalantly, merely putting his hat on backwards.
Bjarne Riis and Jan Ullrich after stage 9 of the '97 TdF.
Cycling history (using memes)
Imagine: stage 1 of the 97 TdF, Bjarne gets caught up behind a pileup and the team can't get orders from the team radio. And in the heat of the moment the team decides to stay with Jan and drop Bjarne.
"That night, I told Rudy we need to have a meeting," Walter Godefroot said, "(...) I asked Heppner why he hadn't waited, asked all of them, while knowing the answer: they have more faith in Jan and they like Jan more. Riders will always do more for a guy they like. After fifteen minutes everyone suddenly falls silent and it's the end of the meeting. Then they all leave, I turn to Rudy and I say that was it for Bjarne: I knew he wouldn't win a second Tour. His time was up."
Jan: *yawns*
Lance: Yeah, being that pretty must be tiring.
Jan: Then you must be exhausted.
Marco: Will you two shut up? Some of us are lonely.
Bjarne: Jan is late again.
Udo: How did this happen? I called him at 8 o’clock this morning and pretended it was 11.
Vino: I printed up a fake schedule for him saying we were starting at 9 instead of noon.
Erik: I set his clock to say PM when it’s really AM.
Bjarne: Oh boy. We may have overdone it.
*Jan bursts through the door*
Jan: WHAT TIME IS IT?
