ARCHAEOLOGY Discovering the World’s Secrets - The collapse of the Maya. Excavations of the site of Cuello in northern Belize by Norman Hammond provide a fascinating insight into the emergence of this civilization. Maize husks discovered at the site have shown how the staple crop was responsible for a population explosion of the Maya. Both the size of the maize cob and the yields of maize steadily increased between 1000 BCE and 200 CE. Hammond also discovered pieces of jade in graves, hinting that an elite was in place well before the #classicmaya period. 1) Symbolically decorated, this censer would have been used to hold a bowl for burning incense. #ancientcivilization #mayahistory #mayanruins #theamericas #americahistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CNP_ZcSrr7k/?igshid=1bqok48zmjfec
