Play time at Clay Time

My one criticism about my blog is the lack of other creative things I said I’d do/write about.

Well, brace yourselves like Ned Stark bracing for winter: I did a thing.

Recently, my friend Mimi and I went to Clay Time, a pottery studio in north London. Now, the last time I did pottery was when I was about 9 years old and I made a “vase” that was wonky. I’ve done marginally better this time around.

This is my...pen...holder...? I’d never heard of this technique, but it involved coiling the clay and layering it until you had something resembling the thing you were trying to make. Then, with something that looks like a butter knife, you smooth the surface until it looks something like this:

Then you paint it grey, realise that’s boring, so you add some colour to the edge. Once that’s done - fire it up!

We also had a go on the pottery wheel - this is where I truly excelled (I say I: a good portion of it was done by the instructor). On the wheel, I made a...flower pot...?

All-in-all, it was an excellent time. It’s nice to spend a couple of hours off your phone (except to document the experience - if there are no pictures, did it even happen?) actually doing something with your hands. And - as a bonus - I now have a...pen holder...and a flower pot!

Look! It actually holds a plant! A great time and something to remember the experience. Win-win.
