Chapter 26: In That Sleep Of Death

Something like a crumpled tube of metal snaked into the light, plated like armour or perhaps like a series of flattened buckets linked together to form a body like a centipede, with the segments at the front reared up and splintered, like a mantis shaped from the metal strips of a boiler explosion. Despite its many segments and the screeching of metal, it moved with uncanny fluidity as it reared up. “What the hell is that?!” Narrator exclaimed. Stanley grabbed the back of Narrator’s shirt and said “Harold.” “Who the fu-” Stanley pulled them both to the ground just as the metal creature lunged through the air above them.

Stanley lurched free, sputtering and gasping for breath. Narrator rolled his eyes and thumped Stanley on the back. “Get a hold of yourself. We’ve been kidnapped.” “Auh shit,” Stanley coughed. He took in a clean breath of air and looked blearily at Narrator. “By who?” “By whom, and going by the branding and what I subconsciously picked up on our way in, this would be the last remnants of the Dreemu startup.”

Working with Maika now has been limiting, but even with her hanging on my neck like an albatross, I still know who I am.”

Business is going extremely well for the Special Acquisitions department, which is great for their egos but terrible for staying out of trouble. Curator practices trusting other people, difficult as it may be. Mariella has time to think about what kind of person she wants to become. Narrator presses on like nothing's changed - if he keeps going forward, he'll never have to face his past.

Stanley realizes, too late, how little he really knows about Narrator.

Chapter 6 - Psychometry 101

It began, of course, with one of Narrator’s unscheduled visits to her office. He had a lot to say, as always, but the important point was this: “They are my employees, Curie. I am perfectly within my rights to supervise a training session with them.” Narrator said, staying firm with his arms crossed. Curator, knowing full well that the only reason he was in her office today was to observe Stanley’s first training session with her (and thought this would somehow make it less obvious), did not challenge him further or correct him on employment hierarchy.

FINALLY GOT THIS CHAPTER OUT!!
