A Transfer Window Primer
There are some things that rattle around in my head every transfer window so instead of putting them in the comments, I’ll share them here for everyone.
1. Keep in mind that a player has to WANT to come to your club. You can’t just sign a guy because you’ve met the other clubs asking price. He has to WANT to come. Just because we offer Zenit their asking price for Witsel doesn’t mean it’s a done deal. He has to want to come to Milan. Does he? I don’t know. If he really wanted to be here bad enough, I think he would already be here. That’s usually how it goes.
2. The other part of any deal of course is MONEY. Even if Milan and Zenit agree on a price, personal terms MUST be agreed. He’s not gonna just take whatever Milan want to pay him. i;m sure his demands are high and he’s going to try to squeeze every nickel he can out of Fester. His current deal runs out in 2017, 18 months away. You can bet if he comes he probably wants more money and certainly an extension
3. Which of course also leads us to the agents! they have to get their cut and generally only get paid when a player makes a move. Some have other deals worked in but most agents only get paid a lump sum portion of the transfer fee when a player moves. For this reason agents have to try to drive up these deals as high as possible and are always in a players ear. They have just as much if not more to gain from a transfer than the players and clubs involved in the deal.
4. And then there’s the rumors! Everyone wants to blame the news outlets for rumors but they usually get that stuff from SOMEWHERE. Where? Well, I think I’ve already mentioned most of them but let’s recap:
Clubs? Yup.
Players? Yup.
Coaches? Oh yeah.
Agents? GUILTY!
HAH! Why do you think we hear about Pato going to almost any club between London and Sydney? Pato and his agent are DYING to find him a new home AND his current club Corinthians are DYING to get him off their wage bill! They paid way to much for him, promised him way too much money AND their coach doesn’t even want him around! He’s the perfect storm of the rumor mill.
Credit to Fester on that one by the way. 15 million for Pato was highway robbery. Hilarious.
Actually, i think agents are probably as much if not more to blame than everyone else put together. As I mentioned above, they really have the most to gain. They don’t want the player they represent to sign a 10 year deal and stay at that club forever. HELL NO! They want a guy like Zlatan who commands huge transfer fees, makes crazy money and is usually on the move more than Christian Vieri. Speaking of Bobo, God bless him. I love him on BeIn Sports. Whoever his agent is/was must be a very happy man.
5. One final thing to remember as well... when it comes to selling a player they have to WANT TO GO. You can’t just sell Mexes to a team in outer Mongolia.... he has to want to go there! Same with Zapata, Cerci or anyone else currently in the squad that folks would love to see somewhere else. And hey, why would they want to leave? They make huge money playing at Milan, they live somewhere around Milan and get all the perks of being a Milan player. Not a bad gig, right? Probably even better if you are an aging vet getting to the tail end of their career that doesn’t play very much anymore. Think about it. Would you want to move to some small provincial club where you aren’t taken care of as well? How about going to a new country to learn a new language? Uproot your whole family? Yeah, maybe not.
IN SHORT? There is a ton that goes into these deals and it’s a good idea to never believe or get excited about any deal til it actually happens. I remember getting SO excited about Tevez a few years ago only to that deal fall through. Never again I said to myself, never again.
Ok, so there you have it. Some things to keep in mind during this and any future transfer window.
