(25/01/2018) Interview to Luca on Stracult (Italian late night TV show about cinema hosted by movie critics)
I’ve never seen this show so I’m not familiar with it, but Luca seemed friendly with all the hosts as if they’re good friends of his.
The first thing Luca says is how hot Stefano Accorsi (Italian actor who’s a guest in the studio) is :)
He says that despite an international cast and producers, a big part of CMBYN is Italian because all the people who worked behind the scenes are from Italy and it’s also Italian “in spirit”.
He says that it’s up to the audience to decide if the film is a gay love story, just a love story or a film about the discovery of self. Then he says that to him CMBYN is “a family movie”. It’s his version of Toy Story: a film about a bunch of sgarrupati (misfits/broken people? This word is difficult to translate) who become better people thanks to each other.
He says that he changed the year from 1987 to 1983 because 1987 felt a bit wrong for the story he wanted to tell. The family shown in the film is a family that encourages Elio’s youth and doesn’t suppress it, and it seemed to him that it fit the 70s ideals more than the 80s. 1983 was the last year before these atmosphere/ideals were destroyed by Thatcherism, Reaganism and Berlusconism.
Referring to the songs chosen for the film (J'adore Venise, Radio Varsavia, Lady Lady Lady etc.) he says that cinema allows you to do something extraordinary: to take things that shaped you as a person and reuse them in the way you want. And that’s what he loves about filmmaking.
When they ask him if he has prepared the speech for the Oscars yet, he jokes: “ragazzi, che discorso? Finisce qua. Non dite cazzate”. (“Guys, what speech? It ends here. Don’t talk shit.”) :)
