Song: Back To The Start - The Summer Set
You’d first known Michael as the boy who lived across the street. After being in the same school for years and hanging out at countless neighborhood block parties, the two of you became close friends. Once you started high school it didn’t take long to fall for each other. He was your first kiss and–after taking his sweet time to make it official–your first real boyfriend. Things were great until graduation came, along with your first semester away at college. You barely got to see each other and when you did, you usually ended up fighting about how little time you spent with each other.
“I don’t want a relationship with my phone anymore!” You’d tell him.
“Well, fine then!” he’d yell, tired of having this same conversation again and again. “You don’t have any relationship anymore!”
From then on, you went your separate ways, keeping up with each other’s lives only through social media. The next year, he met someone new, but she wasn’t around for long. You had tried to move on too, dating guys here and there, never ending up with anything serious. Once the chapter on school came to a close, you went back home, set to start your first real job in a few weeks. It was strange, being back, as though nothing had changed: the Pattersons still took their morning walk every Sunday, your dad had to shoo Ms. Osmond’s cat out of the front yard on a daily basis, and you were still living across the street from Michael.
One day, you noticed a U-Haul parked in the driveway, and there was Michael, coming in and out with boxes, loading them into the back. Despite your better judgment, you decided to go out and talk to him.
“Hey stranger.”
He looked up, stopping when he saw you. “Y/n. Hey.”
You caught up for a bit, finding out that he had a job and was moving into his own place, an apartment on the other side of town. You told him you were doing well too, staying home until you paid off a significant chunk of your student loans. You mentioned that things would feel weird without him in of the neighborhood, reminding you both of your many memories together. After a long pause, you offered to help him pack up the rest of his things and he accepted. You spent the rest of the afternoon talking about old times, wondering if maybe this was the perfect place to pick up where you left of.
