What do you know about coblynau?

shoutout to my welsh goblins of all shapes and sizes.

tbh i'm more familiar with their cousins the knockers. i thought knockers were american in origin as i learned about them in the appalachian folklore of mineshaft goblins but they're apparently cornish. neat! i dig (ha, dig) how any culture that went underground imagined little guys alongside them. coblynau and their cousins are mostly benevolent, with tapping sounds either leading miners towards ore or away from dangers like cave ins or gas. knockers look a bit more animalistic in their descriptions while coblynau were apparently just little guys. more gnomeish than goblinish i suppose? is the difference in proportions or the clothing?

Benevolent creatures, not even half a meter tall. Not all dissimilar in nature from England's bluecaps or Cornwall's knockers.

Coblyn - What sounds make the hair on the back of your neck raise? When is the last time you heard it?

This isn’t a fun answer, but I guess they can’t all be.” Malika sighs, resigned. There is a visible change in her demeanor, a sort of restless disquiet, and she can’t maintain eye contact as she speaks. Instead, her eyes shift all over the place as though taking stock of every exit in the room.  “As a thief, I pride myself at being able to get into places I should not go. That means that I sometimes end up in really well-guarded, well-fortified places. The measures that the extraordinarily wealthy take to keep their skeletons firmly locked away in their closets are... well, they can be quite elaborate and unapologetically violent. Normal traps and locks I can usually get around without too much difficulty. But traps with spells on them? I...” She shudders. “There’s a sound that happens right before a trap that has a spell on it fully goes off. I wish I could explain it. There’s a terrible feeling and then a terrible hum that makes my heart drop into my stomach. And nothing good happens after that hum. The last time I heard it I was breaking into a wealthy estate with a partner. I triggered the trap, felt the change in the air, heard the hum, and then a giant, angry monster was summoned from it. While we managed to take it down in the end, we didn’t do so before it had managed to hurt innocent people.” She stops speaking more on the subject, or in general, here. Instead, she takes a drink of water, her hand shaking as it holds the glass. Pretty sure it was this beastie up here that was summoned.

The Tale Of The Coblyn

Coblyn is where many believe the term goblin was taken from due to the way it's pronounced. Other places call these smaller fae folk Knockers.

I got to spend the day gardening, I scamper around on the rocks, clean the bad nursery soil off the innocent little blants, and put them in the ground! I also dug!  I am the second best on my crew when it comes to using a shovel!  But I also use my hands to burrow little holes for smaller plants.

Coblem Problem

The group of hunters ventured into a mine to clear out the threats the miners spoke about, trying to give them a means to gather the supplies they needed for the upcoming war. They defeated several coblyns and kobolds along the way, but little did they know that a coblyn-infested Golem was just around the corner...

The fight started out a bit rocky, but the group managed to subdue all parts of the enemy. Some of the fighters were poisoned by the coblyn’s poisonous feelers, but were quickly tended to at the lodge.

I went to gather gold ore but was so absolutely delighted that King’s Yield II and Bountiful Yield II work on coblyn larvae that I just made 24 new friends instead.
