Noguera is the largest shire in Catalonia and in all the Catalan Countries, representing 5.56% of Catalonia’s territory. However, is has a very low population, and is formed of towns and villages mostly with less than 1,000 inhabitants whose main income is agriculture, animal husbandry, and the elaboration of products coming from these two sectors. Its capital city and biggest city by far is Balaguer, with 16,485 inhabitants.

The most famous landscape of this district is the Congost de Mont-rebei (Mont-rebei canyon), a stunning canyon created by the Noguera Ribagorçana river crossing the Montsec mountain range. The district is also crossed by many other rivers and lakes.

A piece of coca de recapte (flat cake with smoked eggplant and sweet bellpeppers) with botifarra (a typical sausage from Catalonia). This coca is a common Catalan food especially typical of the Southern and Western areas of Catalonia.
