Hey! What's Codename STEAM?

Well, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is developed by Intelligent Systems, the same people that worked on the Fire Emblem series. In some way, the game is sort of like that. Think of it as a 3D third-person shooter Fire Emblem. Some mechanics are similar: a grid-based real-time RPG, you move around based on your steam limit, you use said steam to shoot aliens on the grid. The turns shift from Player’s Turn to Enemy’s Turn, and vice versa much like Fire Emblem.

The story is about Abraham Lincoln enlisting fictional heroes such as Henry Fleming, John Henry, Tiger Lily, and more, to help him fight back the alien menace invading Earth in the Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace (code name S.T.E.A.M. for short, hence the title of the game).It’s a really fun game to play, and I know not many people have even heard of this new IP. When I first saw the trailer for this, I was excited for it and I bought on launch day.

This game also feature amiibo support! If you have Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina (naturally since this game is made by the FE developers), you can summon these legendary heroes as playable characters to fight the aliens. If they fall in battle, you’ll have to summon them again in the next area using their amiibo. You won’t lose them in your roster once you’ve added them.

-The team fights robots (actual sequel tease from the game)

-The team fights Martians and then actually go to Mars

-The team goes to the Dreamlands

-Apparently Califia was much more violent in her story so now I kind of want to see how she mellowed out in this verse

-I just want to know more about this version of the Oz Squad PLEASE

-Almost everybody on this team has some kind of trauma come on

You know, at this point I might as well just write this TV show and post it to Ao3 myself.

I really really want to write a Codename STEAM fanfic where the team has to go on a mission into the Dreamlands and of course Randolph is playing a really big part of getting everyone there and guiding them through, etc.

And the whole time the team is shocked at how familiar he is with the place and basically has a whole second life there, like imagine everyone’s reactions to finding out he rules an entire kingdom!

At one point they end up getting into ghoul territory so Randolph goes into this whole awkward spiel about ghouls, what they’re like and that they eat dead flesh, including humans and yeah, they can be a bit unsettling and it can smell awful but they really aren’t that bad, he swears, just trust him, okay??

And then they meet some and Randolph just casually greets these blatantly intimidating monsters, catching up with some, getting glomped by the younger ghouls, and eventually introduces the team to one of the clan leaders, his old friend Richard Pickman!

(But not before Pickman excitedly gives him a big ol’ bear hug, of course.)

I got through a recording of Codename STEAM recently and I want to share my thoughts

-This game looks like so much fun! Makes me wish I had a copy and was also better at video games (mainly so I can read the journal entries because I can’t find all of them online and I’m really mad about it)

-It’s about a comic book-y premise of a bunch of classic literary characters forming an Avengers Squad sponsored by Nick Fury Abraham Lincoln to fight eldritch aliens in an alternate history steampunk world, this game was practically made for me!

-RANDOLPH CARTER omg I love him in this game. He is such a snobby little shit (he even does the whole Dramatic Anime Push Up Glasses™️ at one point!) no joke he almost dies in his introductory chapter because he stops to insist that Steve Rogers Henry Fleming call him Professor or Doctor thank you very much during his emergency help message while Miskatonic is getting attacked also his weapon is literally alien catnip and his backpack can sprout mechanical tentacles during his special that’s just cool although I don’t really like how this game is insistent on a snake motif for him because tentacles I guess

-Fox supremacy!! Zorro who?? /j

-Dorothy is so cute!! Her silver shoes are basically engine powered heelies what’s not to like

-Speaking of the Oz Squad, Tin Man being Japanese is pretty cool and kind of brilliant once you think about it!

-Also Lion’s special attack is literally just him screaming into a megaphone 😂😂😂

-Henry and John’s relationship in this game is so cute 😭😭 I ship it so hard

-I’ve never heard of Califia before but she looks absolutely badass so now I want to check out her story

-The fact that we didn’t get a TV show out of this is a goddamn travesty
