↳ The Code of the Sith
I’ve been on a bit of a “Star Wars Rebels is awesome” kick (And it is), but I do need to address the longest running problem with its story: Kanan is a very poor teacher.
And I mean this at its basic level, I’m not trying to get philosophical about attachments or intention. I mean that he is really not very good at teaching Ezra the history, ways, or methods of the Jedi. He’s gone over the application of the Force (Which mainly relates to combat), but that’s it.
It struck me the clearest during “Twilight of the Apprentice” at the close to season two. When Ezra runs into Maul, Maul gives across a generally evil vibe which Ezra doesn’t pick up on. Normally I’d pass that up since Ezra is still a kid, except that in his ramblings, Maul literally quotes from and references the Code of the Sith.
Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion I gain Strength. Through Strength I gain Power. Through Power I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me.
This is the Sith morality encapsulated in a single easy-to-remember mantra. It is taught to their students, enforced by their masters. As such, it should be studied by the Jedi, and yet Ezra has no idea what it is. He doesn’t react at all when Maul refers to breaking his chains or power from strength, and never even suspects that Maul is a Sith.
This is as intricately connected to their culture as any country’s National Anthem or Constitution or Oath of Allegiance, and as such should be instantly recognizable to somebody who has theoretically studied that people. If you sing “O Canada”, I’m going to assume you’re Canadian. If you say “God Save the Queen” I’m going to assume your British. If I say the Pledge of Allegiance, you’re going to assume I’m American. You don’t have to be an expert on these subjects, it’s one of the basic tenets. For Ezra to not even recognize the Code means that Kanan never got around to it in two years of Jedi training, and not even after the Sith actually showed up.
When that happened I got to thinking about other parts of the series, and I realized that Ezra never seems to display any knowledge of the Jedi. He doesn’t know the history of their conflict with the Sith or the Mandalorians. He never imparts Jedi wisdom to anybody -- not even parroting of a saying he doesn’t understand. He’s been taught how to use the Force and nothing else.
I get that Kanan never completed his Jedi training either, that he was only a young padawan when the Order fell. I wouldn’t expect him to know the entirety of all their teachings, or to even be able to remember everything that he had learned fifteen years ago. But to not impart any of the knowledge to Ezra, not even something as basic and obvious as the motto of your greatest rivals, is poor form.
The Force shall free me.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. -The Code of the Sith
Kai’to meditates on the conflicts in his heart.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
Code of the Sith
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
Code of the Sith
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
