CRH: Max Streak Count of 70 Badge!

I just unlocked the Max Streak Count of 70 badge on Codecademy and thought this would be a great time to give them a little plug and review.

The course I've been doing is called "Code Year". Codecademy released this course (and advertised it heavily!) in 2012. Back then, I was in formal programming classes, learning attempting to learn Java, and I popped onto Codecademy for fun and enrichment. I was overwhelmed then to take on two programming languages at once (my neophyte eyes were too big for my...fingers? brain? motivation?), but I've taken my recent downtime as an opportunity to throw myself into serious self-study.

Since I began working in January, I've learned to be somewhat competent with basic JavaScript, and I feel confident in my knowledge! I've programmed a few basic games (FizzBuzz!) and tools (like a cash register), and I'm extremely proud of my final project: a rather complete, working game of Blackjack with a built-in dealer and the ability for the player to hit and stand. It even scores all of the cards and tells the player who won the hand!

This week, I started working with HTML and, if my previous experience with Codecademy is any indication, I'll be proficient with the basics in a few short weeks!

Note about “Code Year”

Okay, I just did a quick test-run with the first learning unit in Code Year, from Codecademy. This is a series of free courses to teach you to learn how to code in one year.

It starts with JavaScript. It starts quick and easy. No prior knowledge of anything is assumed, except you need to be able to read and understand English. (And it helps if you can type reasonably accurately.) 

So I completed 14 of 28 exercises in the first module, called "Getting Started with Programming," and it took me 16 minutes (I set the stopwatch on my phone, no kidding). This is a little bit unfair because I was already familiar with all of it except "console.log" -- which I had never used before. I did have to do a couple of exercises over because I'm a bit dyslexic about > and < ...

Anyway, I'm sure I was faster than a complete newbie, but how long could it really take? If you were 4 times slower than I was, it would take you about an hour to get halfway through.

A new site called Priveazy aims to make protecting your data on Facebook and everywhere else as easy as pie. It might well succeed.

Sounds a lot like Code Year, but for social network privacy.

Rookies at Work, Part 4: Drawing key takeaways

A couple of weeks ago, I learned about Codecademy and their Code Year initiative: Almost 400,000 people worldwide are taking the challenge and learning to code from scratch. Even New York mayor Michael Bloomberg signed on. Who knows? Maybe he’ll surprise us with his own Big Apple-style apps or games.

I find these initiatives very encouraging and look forward to connecting with the growing rookie community. Following are some key takeaways I’ve made on my path to computer literacy.

Coding is a key competency in the Digital Age. Computer literacy (read: the ability to write code) is recognized as a key competency by business, politics and ordinary people like you and me who want to seize opportunities in the Digital Age.

The US of A is still the place for startups. Codecademy was founded last August by two college dropouts, who raised millions from experienced venture capital firms to build their company. As a European, I’m deeply impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit overseas, the ability to think big and to release products quickly.

Social media is ideal terrain for learners and teachers. Ready to teach the world to write code? Apply as a course creator at Codecademy. I’m betting over the next few years you’ll find all types of courses at Codecademy. It’s a great opportunity for those who love to teach.

Expect a high dose of frustration as a rookie. Codecademy’s courses also lack elements I found missing elsewhere (see, “Rookies at Work, Part 3: Missing “parts” in the Rails for Zombies course at Code School”). If your misery loves company, you can meet other frustrated students at stackoverflow.com also searching for help. But it’s just a matter of time until really cool coding courses — provided by hundreds, if not thousands of course creators — start mushrooming at Codecademy.

Make it easy to try before we buy. The courses at Codecademy are free and it takes only one click to sign up with your Facebook account. That’s how to build a business from scratch at warp speed. Give your product away! Once users are familiar with it, they’ll be willing to pay for additional features or services.

Instead of of learning to code, as some promote when they proclaim a code year, people should figure out it's more useful in a first step to learn how to deploy their own web space and install their own blogging, news aggregator or curation engine.

find a web host

use a FTP client

install wordpress or dotclear or whatever

backup your sql database

learn how to work with RSS feeds

more control on information you read and publish, and ultimately make censorship much harder.

I have been stuck and hopelessly confused on a few occasions. And, CodeAcademy doesn't have the kind of courses where you can raise your hand or go to office hours for assistance. Thankfully, they launched the Q&A section a couple weeks ago!

Each focus category has its own Q&A section where people can post their questions about individual exercises to be answered by other Code Year students. The Q&A section is very active, so your cries for help can be answered fairly quickly by other users.  Now, if you need a hint, you don't have to rely on the not-so-helpful ones included in the exercise instructions. Also, the Code Year staff checks the Q&A boards to help answer questions, and respond to complaints of bugs and glitches.
