Roman Dial has made a name for himself courageously heading out on risky adventures. But his son's disappearance in Costa Rica has him shaken—and the details aren't adding up.
I don't know how much good this will do, but it's worth a shot. I know some of you are from Costa Rica and may have already heard about this.
In short, Roman Dial (adventure icon, father of packrafting, professor of biology and mathematics, National Geographic Explorer) has been unable to reach his son, Cody, for about a month now. Cody went to Corcovado National Park (Costa Rica) by himself to hike some of the illegal trails before heading back to school for his masters degree. While Cody is experienced in backcountry trekking, Costa Rican jungles offer a wide variety of dangers such as rivers and canyons hidden by thick foliage, venomous snakes, and ~400 illegal miners.
Friends of Cody's parents have said that a request for Cody's search has been accepted by the president of Costa Rica; however, the U.S. Department of Defense hasn't taken action.
According to Roman, there are ways that U.S. citizens can help: "...email or call their congressman and their senators, and have them put pressure on the Department of Defense. They can just say 'Hey, here’s this missing person Cody Roman Dial in Costa Rica. Why isn’t the US government responding to the Costa Rican request for help to find the missing American in Costa Rica?'"
Roman's an awesome guy and served as my Alaska expert on my first NGSE trip. If you have time, shooting an email out wouldn't hurt!
